Three phrases from Psalm 90 form the heart of this message. First, the reminder that the Lord is our dwelling place calls us to find safety, rest, and true home in God alone. And so for the next few minutes, we're going to open God's Word.

And just for the next few minutes, we're going to open God's Word.

We believe it is God-breathed, God-truth.

There's no errors in it.

And so we believe it is super applicable for our lives.

And so as I said last week, like all this, whenever teaching is to hopefully understand the scriptures,

see what the author was writing to, and then see how it applies in our lives today.

And so that will happen this morning.

And so we're going to look at Psalm 90 for the next few minutes.

It's interesting how different gatherings fit.

And Father's Day, I'm like, I know there's different plans and different things.

Maybe you have a tea time later this afternoon.

And I do, 4.30.

And so we'll get out to that.

And so I was like, man, that would be a shorter message.

And then I came to four and a half pages of notes.

And so we're going to work through Psalm 90 this morning, but I won't keep you all day.

Psalm 90 is really the oldest recorded psalm.

It is a chronicled prayer or prayer written by Moses.

And so it is the only psalm written by Moses.

And so it is the only psalm written by Moses.

It's really, some theologians believe that is the oldest or one of the oldest passages in the entirety of the Bible.

And so it writes towards and appeals towards God's eternal, sovereign, and merciful nature.

And what I love about Psalm 90, and I hope to be able to communicate this this morning,

to an end by your anger, by your wrath, we are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you,

our secret sins, in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath.

We bring our years to an end like a sign. The years of our life are 70, or even by reason of

strength, 80. Yet their span is by toil and trouble. They are soon gone, and by reason of

strength, 80. Oh, excuse me, we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger and your wrath

according to the fear of you? So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Return, O Lord, how long have pity on your servants? Satisfy us in the morning with your

steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as

you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.

Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to your children.

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us. Yes,

establish the work of our hands. God, we love you. We praise you. We come to you this morning.

We thank you for our dads. God, we thank you for the fathers sitting in this room, or

ones that are not. God, we just thank you that you have given them to us. God, as we open Psalm,

90 this morning, we ask that you speak through your word as you always do. God, God, may I get

out of the way. God, may my opinions, my thoughts not be in any of the words communicated this

morning. May your Holy Spirit work in this place, comfort, guide, correct, and ultimately lead us

to praise and worship and honor of you, God. We love you. We praise you, and we honor you in Jesus'

wonderful name. Amen. So there's a lot in that passage, 17 verses. We're not going to be able to

get to all that this morning. But what I wanted to do just for the next few minutes is to highlight

three phrases that I believe that will be applicable, that are super important to our

understanding of what's being taught. And I think they will, they will resonate in your heart and

your soul like they have mine as we have worked through this, this week. The first is found in,

in verse one. And so if you have a Bible and you're an underliner, a highlighter, verse one and two

are, are really just praise of the Lord. They are setting standards of saying, Hey, you know what?

It's a hymn of praise. The first phrase found in verse one is Lord, you have been our dwelling

place in all generations. That phrase is important to understand not only the context of what's being

written in Psalm 90.

But how it applies in our lives today. Lord, you have been our dwelling place and all generations.

What's important is that the beginning of Psalm 90 and at the end of Psalm 90, it begins with

Lord. That word Lord means provider, creator, author, ruler of all nations, ruler of the

universe. God is being affirmed at the beginning of Psalm 90 and at the end of Psalm 90.

I'll say this is super important for us to understand. Psalm 90 is a good blueprint for our

lives. May our lives begin and end with the Lord as understanding that he is the Lord. God is the

Lord. May our gatherings begin that way. May our days begin that way. May every single aspect of

our lives begin with Lord. You are who you say you are. God, you are the provider, the creator,

The ruler of the universe. But what I wanted to highlight out of verse 1 is more than just simply

saying the Lord is the provider. Is that phrase or that word dwelling place? Lord, you have been

our dwelling place. A dwelling place is an identifying or identification to that the Lord

or God is our true home, our safe home, our stable home, place to belong, to love, a shelter from the

storm, a place of rest. Moses writing here,

in Psalm 90 is writing from a place of not having a home. If you know anything about Moses and

to this is he spent 40 years in the palace which wasn't ultimately his home he was uh put in the

nile and and picked out by uh the princess and lived and raised there for 40 years and then

spent 40 years in uh the wilderness being trained up and taught by god and then spent 40 more years

wandering the wilderness and so he spent 120 years of his life without a home and so wandering

trying to figure out where i can find rest where i can find satisfaction where i can find safety

from the storm and so his perspective is you know what god you are that dwelling place you are the

safety yeah i've wandered yeah i've been trying to find satisfaction fulfillment safety completion

in the things of this world but ultimately it only comes from the things of god i'll say this to you

we can find no place of safety without the hand of god we can find no place of fulfillment or rest

without the hand of god without understanding that it comes from the lord we can look at our

health we can look at our homes we can look at our jobs we look at our country look at our political

party we look at our family we look at our bank account we look at all these things but all those

things will come and go and we can find no place of safety without the hand of god we can find no

the only thing that will not come and go that psalm 90 describes the everlasting to everlasting

is god he is our place of source he is our place of strength he is our place of fulfillment a couple

weeks ago as i i told you in this gathering we um we took our staff up to new life camp and did

some training and different things but our overall uh idea and concept for the the couple days we

took our staff up there was understanding how to find rest finding rest we took our staff up to

we all have uh different ways that we think we're finding rest every one of us loves to go hey you

know what i'm looking forward to that vacation i will find rest or you know what i love to find

myself in my couch or my my sofa or my uh my uh my bed or uh i love to find myself walking in the

woods hunting or for me i love to find rest on the lawnmower you're like really yeah i love it

you're like if you drive down my road you're like what is going on with that guy it's my place

of rest i find a a a piece there throw some headphones in and listen to worship music a

podcast a sermon and and i find rest in almost just a relaxed moment and so until i have to

yell at my kids because over the lawnmower and over my my noise canceling headphones and so it

is really loud at that point but i find rest there but ultimately that's not the true rest

or peace or strength that's described here in psalm 90 that only can

come from the lord that's what the bible describes as a peace that passes all understanding i can't

figure out that why i find rest or peace or safety or shelter in this moment i don't know

why i have it here guess what it only comes from the lord but there is a movement in our world in

our culture in our churches in our country you know what if i have enough in my bank account if

i have a a vehicle a home if i have a

these clothes if i have this job of you fill in the blank i'll find safety truth of the matter it

is it's not found in any of those things our rest comes in the lord maybe you have grown up or maybe

you come from a dysfunctional home you're like man i don't even know what this rest comes from

it's just chaos all the time i'll say this to you this morning your peace your strength your safety

comes from the lord

comes from the lord feel like in moments of the chaos in this world we must seek safety and solace

and strength in the lord lord you have been if you want to fill in that blank you have been my

dwelling place in all situations a struggle with a job and a struggle with hell

and struggle in a marriage, and struggle in all areas of my life. God, you have been my dwelling

place. I run to you. I run to you to find rest. I run to you to find safety. I run to you to find

fulfillment. I run to you. That's if you really want to truly examine the application of that

statement. What do you run to in times of trouble? Do you run to a substance? Do you run to a

relationship? Do you run to other things that are outside of God, or do I run to God? As we said last

week, drawing near to God, and as he draws near to us, that's the application of that phrase. What

am I running to in times of trouble, realizing that my safety, my shelter is only coming from

the Lord? Lord, you've been my dwelling place in all generations and all situations. The second

phrase this morning,

it's found in verse 12. Verse 12 describes or gives us the action step, if you will, teach us

to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Verse 12 is in a group of passages

where we see ultimately the brevity of life. Psalm 90, verse 12 encourages us to have an

eternal outlook, reminding us that life

is short. As James describes, life is a vapor here today and gone tomorrow. The New Living

Translation reads, verse 12 is, teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow

in wisdom. So it's the second phrase that we're looking at this morning, meaning we're to count,

to identify, to evaluate our days. It's not a countdown to death and like a,

a negative way, like, oh my gosh, this is a woe is me. I only have not this day left,

this day left. That's not what's being described here, but it's living with intentionality or

living with an acknowledging that says my life is limited. I have one shot, one opportunity to live

out my life in the way God has given me. And I don't know how long I have. See, true wisdom is

prioritizing what matters in our lives. And I don't know how long I have. I don't know how long I have.

Eternally evaluating them. It encourages us to make choices that count for eternity. Live with

purpose. James chapter four says, come now you who say today or tomorrow will go in such and such a

town will spend a year there and trade and make profits. Yet you do not know what tomorrow will

bring. What is your life for you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

Instead, you ought to.

If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that. That is a realization of God is eternal.

And in this life, I am not. Psalm chapter 39 echoes the same idea. Oh Lord, make me know my end.

What is the measure of my days? Let me know how fleeting I am. Behold, you have made my days a

few hand breaths and my lifetime is as nothing before you. There's a pastor named John Piper.

He wrote a book years ago called Don't Waste Your Life. I read it years ago. A few phrases that

jump out. It's the idea of not wasting your life or realizing that, you know what, if tomorrow

were not come in my life, I would live today with everything that I have for the Lord.

It's a great country song. Live like you were dying, right? Just to live and saying,

you know what, I'm not promised tomorrow. What am I going to do today that I'm valuing?

That I don't know what tomorrow brings. I don't know what Tuesday brings. I don't know what

Wednesday brings. I don't know what next month, next week, next year brings. But I know what today

I have breath in my lungs and with them, I'm going to glorify God and use it for eternal impact.

But John Piper said, remember, you have one life, that's all.

You were made for God, don't waste it.

He describes the wasted life as the life without passion for the supremacy of God in all things,

for the joy of all people.

The phrase doesn't just say, number your days.

If it just said that, we could say, okay, let's move on, I number your days.

It says, so teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of, what's that last word?

What's that last word?

Come on.

Wisdom, right?

That we may get a heart of wisdom.

It's important for us to understand.

See, wisdom begins and ends with God.

James chapter one tells us if we lack wisdom to ask of God, and he will give it generously.

We must understand wisdom, the wise, as we count our days.

See, the wise pray for a heart of wisdom.

The wise understand the brevity of life, and the wise seek to obtain,

a heart of wisdom.

I thought through that as being now in my 40s, realizing the brevity of life is so much

different than when I was 15, 20 years ago.

Realizing all the dumb, stupid things I did, like, wow, you could have died in that moment.

What were you thinking?

I start to realize that, and you go, okay, does that just come with old age?

I hope wisdom comes with old age, but it's not an automatic.

I know a lot of not wise older people, right?

I'm not kicking anybody in.

But we must understand that you look back and go, wow, that was immature.

Those were not wise decisions, driving that speed down that road,

getting all four wheels off of the car, off of the ground, right?

That's not your story.

That's my story, okay?

All right.

You go, those were not smart decisions, not wise.

But now I go, what wise decisions am I going to make?

I'm going to value.

I'm going to value my days, realizing that, yes, as a 16, 17, 25-year-old, or whatever

you find yourself, oh, I've got the rest of my life to live.

Maybe, maybe, maybe.

Rather than looking and going, I have today, what am I going to do with it for eternal

What really, truly matters, that's what wisdom comes from.

See, when we mark or we count our days properly, answering that lifelong question, or the world

is asking, what's the meaning of life?

Guess what?

When we mark our days and become wise, that answer is really easy, is to glorify God.

And everything that I say and do, I love the Lord, my God, with all my heart, with all

my soul, with all my mind, with all my strength.

It's putting my time and my resources into things that really, truly matter, not things

that really, truly don't have eternal impact.

Some things, those things, they're nice, they're fun, but does this really, truly matter?

Am I running to that, tying the two phrases together?

Am I running to things that really don't matter?

Or am I going to come to the wise and saying, you know what?

Yeah, that was cool, but ultimately, this has eternal impact, and that's what I'm going

to put my time, my effort, my abilities, my stress into.

Because when we look at it, at the end of our lives, we're going to look back, oh man,

I wish I'd have made more money.

No, no, no.

I wish I could have seen one more person saved.

I wish I could have seen one more person transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I wish I could have seen a marriage, a family saved, so we can look back, oh, I wish I would

have played this golf course.

I wish I would have traveled here.

Those are not bad things, but if those are more important than eternal things, you are

not wise.

It's examining what truly matters in life.

Don't waste your life.

In Luke chapter 12, Luke tells, or excuse me, Jesus.

Jesus tells a parable, and Luke records it, of a rich man who only wanted to eat.

drink and be merry. They had no time or thought for God. See, the rich man believed in years

to enjoy his perfect life, but God required his soul that very night. See, if the rich man would

have numbered his days, valued his moments, things that had eternal significance, his life would have

been different. Luke chapter 12, verse 19, and I will say to my soul, soul, you have ample goods

laid up for many years. Relax, eat, drink, and be merry. But verse 20 is God's response. But God

said to him, fool, this night your soul is required of you. The things you have prepared, whose will

they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. What are we

investing our time and our resources in? Let's look at the last phrase that I want to talk about

this morning. It's found in verse 17. It's much of the last,

I actually have it highlighted in my Bible, verse 16 and 17, because it's much of my prayer that I

have for everything that I do in my life. In ministry for kids, this is what I see. Verse 17,

let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us. Yes,

establish the work of our hands. This is Moses' prayer, prayer to God that God would bless the

things that he did, that he would bless all that he did.

God, I'm seeking to honor you. Bless it. God, I'm preaching this message. Bless it. God,

I'm working this job. Bless it. God, I'm trying to be the husband you've called me to be.

Bless it. God, I'm seeking to be the father you want me to be. Bless it. God, I'm doing everything

that I say and do. Bless it. As Colossians 3 says, whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord,

not for men, knowing that from the Lord, you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are

serving the Lord. You are receiving the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord. You are

the Lord Christ, realizing that everything that I do, I love that phrase, in whatever I do,

it encompasses my life. God, as I'm driving down the road, may I honor you. As I'm listening to

the radio, may I honor you. As I'm talking, as I'm doing this or that, may I honor you.

It's easy to preach at 1130 on a Sunday morning, right? Come on, let's get honest here. Thank you,

three of you. The rest are working through it.

Yeah, I want to honor the Lord. Yeah, this is great. But life can make you apathetic,

apathy, whatever. It's all vain. What? Solomon said it in Ecclesiastes. Vanity, vanity, says the

preacher. Vanity of vanities. All this is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he

toils under the sun? Is there any meaning to what I'm doing? Or do I just take my head off my pillow,

go to my work?

Drive home, watch the tigers, get frustrated, then go to bed. No, that's what happens. That's

when apathy creeps into our lives. There's no meaning. There's no purpose. There's another

day around the sun. I was texting with a couple of buddies the other day. I hadn't talked to,

I hadn't seen them probably in 10 years. I was just checking in to see how they were doing.

Then, hey, how's life? What's going on? And one of them says, just surviving. And I responded,

oh man, that's not good. Can I pray for you? What's going on? But I'm glad at his,

because I think if we're all honest, there's many of us sitting in this room or joining us online

that would text back the same thing. Just surviving. Just hanging on. Many days that

I feel that same way. Just surviving. Just hanging on as hard as I can.

not sure that I can even make tomorrow, just surviving. That's not the way God has called us

to live. That's not the way God has designed us to be. The Bible says that we can have life and

have it abundant, a fulfilled life, a completed life, not in our bank accounts, not in our jobs,

not in our relationships, but in our dwelling place that is the Lord. And as we seek to be wise,

as we seek to live out for him, realizing that none of us do it perfect. God, I just want your

blessing in my life. I don't want apathy to creep in to take over. Oh, what does it mean anyways?

No, I've got one opportunity to live this life and I'm going to do it to the fullest to honor

the Lord Jesus and everything that I say and do, not perfectly, but realizing that I have this

Sunday, June 21st, and I'm going to live it to the fullest to honor the Lord. I think that's

the end of the sermon. Thank you.

That's our heartbeat. It has to be because you don't know if tomorrow will even come. I'd say

that flippant. No, like, oh, that's just preacher speak. No, no, that's, that's reality. May our

prayer be gone. I want your favor. I want your hand. I want your providence in my life. I want

it to work in all that I do. I want to be molded, shaped, directed, guided, corrected by you, God.

There's so much in Psalm 90, but I wanted to highlight these three phrases because I

thought they were so practical in our lives. Lord, you have been my, or our dwelling place.

Lord, teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Lastly, let the favor of our

Lord, of the Lord, our God be upon us and establish the works of our hands upon us. Yes, establish the

work of our hands. I love verse 16. I'm going to read it. It doesn't have much to do with my message

and it's not even in my notes, but I thought it was so practical. Let your work be shown to your

servants and your glorious power to their children.

Dad, I'm talking to you right now. Dad, may your kids see the work of the Lord in you. That's good

and bad. That's good and bad. May they see, yeah, you know what? I was wrong in this and the Holy

Spirit convicted me and I'm seeking forgiveness. Or I want to tell you how the Lord saved and

transformed me in a mighty way. I didn't deserve it. I want to show you how the Lord brought us

through the worst moments of our lives. I didn't know if our marriage, our family would make it,

but I want to show you what the Lord has done.

Verse 16. That's not in my message, not in my notes, but I felt like I had to share it.

All right. But I love those three phrases. So real, so practical. The last few years,

my wife and I and family have been watching a show on CBS called Survivor. And so you've heard

me discuss and talk about it. All right. Take it easy. It's not that great. No, I'm just kidding.

All right. We like it. It's lots of fun. We've had some survivor parties and just as a finale,

lots of fun. And so on the show, they,

put some people on an island. It used to be a lot harder than it is now, but they put them on an

island and put them in different tribes and they try to have challenges and different things. I've

always wanted to go on it. And so I thought it'd be fun. I can sleep anywhere. I can't really eat

anything, but we figured out. Okay. All right. So it'd be lots of fun. But on the show, they

rally on a tree. And so they have a machete and they mark each day that they've been on the island.

And so it's, I don't know, it's like 30 days now. It used to be longer, but it's like 30 days where

they'll mark on, Hey, made another day, made another day, made another day looking and knowing,

Hey, you know what? After those 30 days, one, there'll be one of them that will win $1 million.

And I'd say for most of them, Oh my goodness, I'm going to get ready to eat something in 30 days.

Right. And that time is probably worth more than a million dollars to some.

that moment, they are just looking and longing toward the end. And I was just sitting prepping

for this message. I thought of these people marking that tree. I thought about our lives

as Moses is writing in Psalm chapter 90, realizing that we have one life, looking at the everlasting

hand of God and seeing that, hey, you know what? I'm not God. I have a fragile life. God, I seek

to glorify you. I seek to honor you. God, may you bless it. May you bless the time I've given,

but I don't know what I have. Those are just the simple summary statements of Psalm chapter 90.

I thought about the exercise of not just marking a tree, but putting an X on a paper calendar. I

don't know if you use a paper calendar. I don't anymore. But if you were to have a calendar in

your home, day gone, day gone, day gone. Never get it back, right? You wish you could. As many

things in my life, I'm like, man, I wish I could have that day back. I wish I could have that action

back. I wish I could have that

response back. I wish I had those words back. Keep checking those squares. Keep checking those

squares. Keep marking that tree. Maybe you do that. See, I think the contestants in Survivor

can teach us something this moment. They're looking purpose to the end. They're not forgetting

about, hey, you know what? There's some moments in my life right now that I'm having to battle

through. That's our lives. As we mark today, June 21st, 2026, which is crazy. I saw a guy went to

high school with yesterday. I hadn't seen him probably in 15 years. Both a little bigger now

than we were then. And where has life gone? He's got a couple of young kids. I go, yeah, my oldest

can be 18 in October. He goes, are you serious? I said, yes. It's crazy. It's crazy. This life

keeps rolling through. And as we're, you can get caught in it and going, you know what? It doesn't

matter. Apathetic vanity or realize, God, you've given me one life. You've given me today. You've

called me with purpose. You've placed me on a calling. You place and change and transform my

life. God, I want to run this race with endurance, keeping my eyes on you on the end, fixed on your

purpose, your calling, because yeah, the race can get bumpy. Yeah, we can stumble. Yeah, we can fall,

but I want to run seeking to obtain the prize. And that prize is hearing the father say, well done,

my good in faith.

I want to hear the Lord say that. Oh my goodness. I wasted this year. I wasted this month. I wasted

these days. You're going to be sitting here today going, is it worth it? Is the prize even worth it?

Is it worthwhile? Can I say this emphatically? Yes. Yes. It is the true meaning of life.

Tomorrow, when you take your head off your pillow to your job, ah, you know what? Just another,

another Monday. No, it's not. No, it's not. It is a day the Lord has made. It's a day the Lord has

given you. How will you use it for him? Because you're not promised the next Monday. I wish I

could say that we were, but that's not the reality this morning. Mark your days, value them, see what

eternal impact you are doing. I read one commentator, evaluate your life. I thought, man, I don't want to

do that, but that's what God has called us.

the wise. Some of you look back, man, you got a few more years than I do. You're nicely saying

you're older than me. Some of you are younger. That's okay. Why the psalmist in Psalm 90 says

maybe 70, maybe 80. We don't know. No. Wise will look at this day and say, how am I using it for

internal impact? Tell you this, have that conversation today, not only with yourself,

but with your spouse, with your family, with your kids, even with God, the wise would do.

I pray for you this morning. God, we love you. We praise you. We honor you. Thank you for this

morning. Thank you for your word. God, it has challenged and convicted me. These just three

phrases from Psalm 90, the understanding the context of what Moses is writing. Ultimately,

God, may our heartbeat, our effort, may our time, our passions, our stresses realize. So what are

we doing with today? God, I just seek to honor you with today. The Lord's prayer, give us this day,

our daily bread.

God, let tomorrow worry about tomorrow. I'll worry about today, realizing what am I doing to honor

and glorify you? God, as that prayer of Moses in Psalm 90 is asking for your blessings, bless our

efforts. God, I pray that all the time. You know that. I pray that for this church. I pray that for

sermons. I pray that for every effort and time that I do. God, I just pray that you bless it.

May it not be about Caleb. May it not be about my effort. May it not be about my legacy,

but the name of Jesus.

That's my prayer, God, that you bless it. You do great things. That be our prayer as followers of

you. God, we love you. You're the Lord of all. Grateful for your grace and your mercy. Thank you

for your forgiveness. Thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins. God,

thank you. We love you. We honor you. We worship you in Jesus' wonderful name. Amen.
