Romans S26 · 12:1-2

Listen to this message

The sermon examines Romans 12:1-2, urging listeners to present their bodies as living sacrifices and to reject conformity to the world. It explains that true transformation happens through renewing the mind with Scripture, prayer, and community, which equips believers to test and discern God’s good, acceptable, and perfect will. The speaker calls on followers to serve as Christ’s ambassadors, sharing the gospel and caring for one another. The message asks each person to surrender daily life to God and actively pursue growth in faith.

0:22
At the end of the day, we just want to connect with you and be a blessing in any way that we can.
0:27

0:34
Thanks again for joining us and we hope you are blessed by today's message.
0:47
We're super excited that you joined us today.
0:50
Super excited to be teaching from the book of Romans.
0:53
So if you are new or just joining us for the first time, please turn to Romans chapter 12.
1:04
If you have been with us for the first 11 chapters,
1:07
we have had a lot of theology and then in the last three chapters,
1:11
you know, talking about Israel's previous state and their present state and their future state.
1:17
There was a lot of heavy topics and the scripture here takes a huge turn to helping us know how we can live a transformed life.
1:27
The questions become much more about what we should be doing every day as a follower of Jesus Christ.
1:34
We're going to hear about what we should do with other believers,
1:37
what we should do toward our community,
1:39
what we should do toward our enemies.
1:41
That's a hard one, guys.
1:42
It's really hard what the scripture tells us to do,
1:45
what we should do toward government,
1:46
what we should do with our weaker brothers and sisters.
1:50
And so this section of scripture was really introduced to me by a gentleman who talked to me about the will of God.
2:00
And so the question came up,
2:01
if I were to tell you that I know God's will for your life,
2:06
what would you think?
2:11
I had a gentleman,
2:13
a pastor come up to me.
2:14
He said,
2:14
I know God's will for your life.
2:18
And I was really excited because I had no clue what God's will was for my life.
2:23
I had no idea,
2:25
right?
2:28
She wanted to get married.
2:35
What major am I going to declare when I get to that college?
2:39
What am I going to do with the rest of my life?
2:42
Right?
2:42
We were thinking,
2:43
I was thinking these huge questions.
2:45
What is God's will for my life?
2:50
I sat down with this pastor and he basically said,
2:55
I think God's will is for you to go to this school and God's will is for you to be a pastor.
2:59
So the school he wanted me to go to now.
3:03
No.
3:03
So I guess one out of two ain't bad,
3:04
right?
3:05
50% F.
3:06
I guess it's not bad,
3:07
but it was interesting.
3:09
He told all the guys that he wanted him to be pastors.
3:14
you know,
3:16
right?
3:16
He,
3:16
he wanted this school because,
3:18
because that's where he had gone to school.
3:21
He probably hadn't given much thought to God's will for my life.
3:26
And so I go around really hurt by this.
3:29
And then at the river church,
3:32
one time we were talking and he looked at me and he said,
3:37
would you like to know God's will for your life?
3:39
And I'm like,
3:39
Oh no,
3:41
like this guy.
3:43
I don't want him to do what the last guy did.
3:46
I don't want him to give me some trash advice,
3:48
pretending that it's God's will for my life.
3:52
And he sat me down and he opened up to me.
3:54
And so I went to Romans chapter 12 and I would tell you that my life has been
3:59
transformed in many ways by that old man,
4:02
giving me that teaching so that I knew how to correctly look at God's word to
4:08
know what it is that God is calling us to do in our lives.
4:13
But I have to admit it was a hard one at first.
4:16
I was like,
4:16
Oh no.
4:17
Romans chapter 12 verses one and two says,
4:22
I appeal to you.
4:31
which is your spiritual worship.
4:34
Do not be conformed to this world,
4:37
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing you may discern
4:42
what is the will of God.
4:46
What is good?
4:50
What is perfect?
4:53
some of you are really disappointed with the answer of starting in Romans
4:59
right?
4:59
Because we,
5:00
we have these big questions in,
5:02
in our lives.
5:03
Well,
5:03
if you're going to take me to Romans chapter 12,
5:05
what do I do with where I go to college?
5:08
What do I do if I'm supposed to marry this person?
5:12
What do I do if,
5:13
are we supposed to snowbird and leave our family and go stay in Florida half
5:19
right?
5:20
These are big questions and they need to be brought to the Lord.
5:24
But again,
5:25
we can spend our whole lives being bound up,
5:31
worried about all those decisions and neglect what the scripture,
5:36
is telling us is the will of God.
5:40
And so there is,
5:43
They should be brought before the Lord.
5:45
They should be prayed over.
5:47
They should be discussed,
5:48
but not at the expense of what the scripture is teaching us.
5:54
So let's go back.
5:59
I appeal to you,
6:02
by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,
6:10
which is your spiritual worship.
6:12
The apostle Paul through the Holy Spirit is asking us is urging us is appealing
6:20
to us that we consider the mercies of God in our life.
6:26
These great compassions that we receive from the Lord.
6:31
Now I hope and pray that when you look back at your life,
6:34
that you see the mercy of the Lord on your life.
6:39
And he is urging us as brothers and sisters who know the Lord.
6:44
He's appealing to us that we consider the mercy,
6:49
the mercy that the Lord has bestowed upon us.
6:52
If you can't see the mercy that God has given to us and to you in your life,
6:59
please speak to someone because it is a very scary spot that you are in because
7:07
we just took communion and communion was a time of examining ourselves.
7:13
And then we would do this to remember what the Lord has done for us.
7:19
And that is a time of remembering the great mercy,
7:22
remembering the grace that was given to us.
7:26
And so we have to be careful as we,
7:28
as we live our lives,
7:29
that we look for these mercies.
7:31
And he says that he's appealing to us.
7:33
This is serious.
7:34
This is urgent.
7:35
He's writing it in a letter and that letter is going to be read.
7:39
So this urgency,
7:42
this trying to get us to do this in a very public format.
7:49
And he uses the term brothers,
7:53
but it's to tell us that this is for the church.
7:58
This is for believers.
7:59
This is for followers.
8:15
And so, yes, this means our physical bodies.
8:20
And yes, if you study this, it means our lives.
8:26
We live our lives to be holy, to be acceptable.
8:32
This is our worship.
8:35
But many times, do we live our lives?
8:41
Romans 6, 13 reminds us, it says,
8:44
do not present.
8:50
but present yourselves to God
8:52
as those who have been brought from death to life.
8:57
When we look at our mercies that have been bestowed upon us,
9:11
That's why we're being urged.
9:13
That's why he's appealing to us
9:24
I'm going to share it again.
9:25
I've had a lot of men.
9:27
I would die for the Lord.
9:28
I go, yeah, but you won't live for him.
9:34
I believe you when you say you would die for the Lord.
9:41
But Paul didn't appeal to us to die for the Lord.
9:44
Some of us may be called to die for the Lord.
9:48
I'm not trying to make light of it.
9:50
But what is being taught here is that we live for the Lord
9:55
because he died for us.
9:57
We don't die for the Lord because he died for us.
10:01
We live for the Lord.
10:10
it's important because it demonstrates our love to him.
10:14
It demonstrates our worship of him.
10:16
It demonstrates our praise of him.
10:18
The fruit of my life should give glory to him.
10:22
The things that I have, the things that I do,
10:24
the resources that I can use.
10:29
And this seems very reasonable.
10:31
He paid the ransom for my life,
10:34
but I'm going to live life how I want to live.
10:37
He paid the debt that was against me,
10:41
but I'm going to...
10:42
You know, Roy, this seems very archaic.
10:43
It's an archaic idea that we should live for the Lord.
10:46
Like he gave us a brain.
10:48
We ought to know how to use our brain.
10:50
He gave us some training.
10:51
We ought to know how to use our training.
10:55
We ought to know how to use our vocation.
11:05
that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice.
11:13
I'm not saying that training is wrong.
11:16
I'm not saying your vocation is wrong.
11:18
I'm not saying any of those things are wrong in your life.
11:20
It is not what the scripture is saying.
11:22
It is reminding us of this great ability
11:28
that we have to present our bodies as a living sacrifice.
11:37
1 Corinthians 6, 18 through 20.
11:40
It'll be on the screen.
11:42
It says,
11:42
Or do you not know that your body is the temple
11:45
of the Holy Spirit within you,
11:48
whom you have from God?
11:51
You have the Spirit from God.
11:53
You are not your own,
11:54
for you were bought with a price.
11:57
So glorify God in your body.
12:01
Again, it's not just this one time in the book of Romans
12:07
that we see this.
12:09
You and I, the Holy Spirit comes to reside in us.
12:14
Listen, Old Testament Christians did not all have that.
12:18
The Spirit wasn't residing in them.
12:20
The Spirit might come for a while,
12:22
might leave for a while.
12:23
Yes, there are a few that the scripture says
12:25
had the Holy Spirit in their lives,
12:27
but it wasn't the constant that we have today
12:30
because you have been bought with a price.
12:32
I have been bought with a price.
12:34
I have been brought from death to life.
12:38
And Paul is urging me,
12:40
he is appealing to me
12:42
through the Holy Spirit
12:44
that we are to present.
12:48
It doesn't say God's going to take your life,
12:54
We are to present our lives,
12:58
not to be used for unrighteousness,
13:04
but we have to remember that we have many, many.
13:10
I hear this all the time.
13:15
I've ever had in my life.
13:17
And I go, do they know the Lord?
13:18
No, they're such good people.
13:25
It's hard.
13:30
The scripture says they're dead.
13:34
They do good things.
13:38
They're dead.
13:39
When we're looking at the spiritual weight
13:44
that is against them, they're dead.
13:47
We've got to get our heads wrapped around this church.
13:50
When we go out and love others and point others,
13:55
you and I were dead in our trespasses.
14:00
It's a privilege that we have now
14:05
It's a privilege to glorify God in our bodies.
14:08
Most of us look at it like it's such a drag.
14:11
It's not what I want to do.
14:16
It's not the plan that I have.
14:18
I've been working my whole life for this.
14:41
Wiersbe, one of the guys that I love to study up on,
14:45
it dawned on me through studying this
14:47
that Jesus Christ himself as God
14:50
took on a body, do the Lord's will,
14:54
but his body is in heaven today.
14:59
And that he sends his spirit to us
15:01
to dwell in our bodies.
15:06
And we are called to do his work.
15:08
Through our bodies.
15:10
We're called to love one another.
15:13
We're called to lift one another up.
15:15
To care for one another.
15:18
We get to do the work.
15:21
God came and took on a body.
15:24
And that body died and was rose again.
15:27
And now is in heaven waiting for the second coming of Christ.
15:30
And he sent his spirit to us.
15:33
We get to, that spirit lives within us.
15:36
The temple of the Holy Spirit.
15:39
And now we get to do these things.
15:41
And Paul is like, hey, hey, hey.
15:43
I taught you a bunch of stuff.
15:44
Hey, I urge you.
15:47
I appeal to you to present your bodies.
15:51
Brothers and sisters, people who know the Lord.
15:56
That God's work might continue through us.
15:59
We must yield the members of the body
16:02
for the Holy Spirit to use doing God's work.
16:08
And because of this love that he had for us,
16:11
because of what he has done for us,
16:13
because he has chosen us,
16:15
because he has given the Holy Spirit to us,
16:18
we are his ambassadors.
16:20
We are his disciple makers.
16:25
We are his need fillers.
16:30
You and I get to do this
16:32
because there are those here that don't know the Lord.
16:40
There are those here that are hearing my voice
16:42
that do not accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
16:45
They're not his ambassadors.
16:49
They're not disciple makers.
16:50
They're not gospel presenters.
16:55
Their only status is that they live in sin
16:59
and their fallen nature.
17:02
Ephesians 2, verses 1 through 3 says,
17:06
And you were dead in the trespasses and sin
17:09
in which you once walked,
17:15
following the prince of the power of the air,
17:18
the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience,
17:22
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh,
17:27
carrying out the desires of our body and of the mind.
17:30
And we're by nature children of wrath,
17:34
but the rest of mankind.
17:36
We were bought from a price.
17:42
This said we were following the course of this world.
17:46
Then we were following the prince of the power of the air.
17:54
The spirit that's now at work in the sons of disobedience.
17:57
That we followed the passion of our bodies,
18:00
carrying out the desires of our body and mind.
18:03
And we were children of wrath.
18:06
That's where you have been bought from.
18:08
That's where I have been bought from.
18:10
That's where I have been made alive from.
18:13
That's where you who call Christ your Savior
18:15
and believe in him,
18:16
and believe and accept you have been called from.
18:21
And he's like, because of this,
18:25
you should present your body as a living sacrifice.
18:31
Again, for those who don't know Christ as Lord,
18:36
Luke 24, verses 46 through 48.
18:39
I want to include this right here.
18:42
The verse says,
18:43
Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer
18:46
and on the third day rise from the dead,
18:49
and that repentance for the forgiveness of sin
18:52
should be proclaimed in his name,
18:58
You are witnesses of these things.
19:01
If you don't know what I'm talking about
19:03
when I mention knowing Jesus Christ,
19:07
being in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
19:09
If you don't know what I'm talking about
19:10
when I'm saying you were bought with a price,
19:14
we look at this and we know that Christ
19:17
suffered and died for our sins
19:20
and he was risen from the grave.
19:24
And it says here that we can partake in this
19:27
and that repentance for the forgiveness
19:30
of sin should be proclaimed.
19:35
That you and I can go before him
19:38
and we can repent of our sin.
19:41
so I can go ahead and do it again.
19:44
I run into a lot of people that ask me,
19:48
Roy, my loved one said a prayer
19:50
and now live like the devil.
19:58
And they think they're saved.
20:03
And I said, yes, for many people,
20:05
saying a prayer is where it starts.
20:06
It started with me.
20:11
if you've come to the knowledge that you are a sinner
20:13
and I am thankful for it.
20:15
I'm thankful for that prayer.
20:17
But it is the repentance
20:18
for the forgiveness of sin.
20:22
It starts there, but there must be repentance.
20:29
It doesn't say perfection.
20:31
It doesn't say without sin.
20:33
But there has to be repentance.
20:41
But so often we fall into,
20:44
well, they're really nice people.
20:47
But if you don't want to present your body
20:51
as a living sacrifice, if you resist that,
20:53
if you think that's trash,
20:54
if you don't want to follow that,
21:01
Because your brothers and sisters
21:03
need to share the scripture with you.
21:09
must be thought about.
21:10
It must be brought about.
21:12
Let's go on to verse 2.
21:17
Do not be conformed to this world,
21:19
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
21:22
that by testing you may discern
21:24
what is the will of God,
21:26
what is good and acceptable and perfect.
21:31
Many of us think, oh, you know, we're free.
21:40
I had a buddy when I was in college.
21:43
He said, hey, I need some help.
21:45
I go, okay.
21:49
Now, I would say I was pretty good looking back then,
21:52
but I'm sure that's not why he picked me, right?
21:54
He said, hey, I think you'll follow the instructions
21:57
that I'm giving you.
21:58
And this is actually kind of a dangerous job.
22:00
I had zero clue how to do this.
22:03
And we would go to wooden boats.
22:05
And I mean, some of these wooden boats were enormous.
22:08
People were like, yeah, yeah, yeah, wooden boats.
22:16
Built in 1910.
22:17
And we're restoring it because some of the wood is rotten.
22:21
And I'm like, yeah, that's really cool.
22:23
I would love to help you.
22:24
And we go and we get this huge piece of wood, 30 feet long.
22:28
And I'm looking, he goes, yeah,
22:30
we gotta replace this plank right here.
22:32
Now, this plank starts at the bow of the boat,
22:38
And within a few feet, it's twisted to a 45 degree angle.
22:44
But if you can't,
22:46
keep going back by the time that that plank ends,
22:50
it's under the boat and it's twisted completely the opposite way.
22:56
And it's one piece of wood.
22:59
And I'm like, do this, right?
23:05
And then he taught me how you do this.
23:08
And people say, well, what do you mean?
23:19
all sorts of things that we are doing,
23:23
to take that piece of wood,
23:24
and you can only push it so far.
23:27
At some time, it has to conform.
23:30
You don't start at the other end and say,
23:32
you attach it at the front,
23:33
I'll attach it at the back.
23:37
No, you start in the front.
23:40
And you start attaching it.
23:42
And you start to conform that wood.
23:44
Oh, it's getting pretty tight here.
23:47
We gotta put some water on it.
23:48
We gotta do something to it.
23:50
We gotta put some extra screws right here.
23:52
We need to take a jack and push on it
23:54
so we can get this in the right position.
23:58
And it is amazing that you can take a piece of wood
24:00
and it doesn't break and twist it.
24:05
And it's useful.
24:08
And when I think of that word conformed,
24:11
I think, how conformed are we?
24:15
How conformed are we to our old selves?
24:18
The one that said when we were dead in sin,
24:21
the one where we were sons of Satan, basically.
24:24
How much does that conform us?
24:26
And how much does this present age conform us?
24:31
Just because we're in the church
24:33
doesn't mean that we don't struggle
24:35
with how this world conforms us.
24:38
I know some age groups are sitting here,
24:42
not me, not me.
24:45
Well, I'll start with my senior friends.
24:48
How much does Fox News, CNN News,
24:57
how much does that news conform you?
25:04
Young people, how much does all your social media conform you?
25:11
Middle-aged people, how much do the things that you enjoy,
25:14
how much does the TV,
25:16
how much does the programs that you watch,
25:18
how much does Instagram, Facebook,
25:21
I know, young people, old people, right?
25:23
How much do these things,
25:27
how much does the fact that God is love,
25:30
that's true, God is love,
25:41
God is also wrath.
25:54
Those are all equal attributes of God.
25:59
But when we're being pushed to conform
26:02
to the philosophy of this present age,
26:05
we're being pushed, well, God is love,
26:08
how they're supposed to live their life.
26:11
I'm like, I'm not,
26:11
I'm not telling them.
26:13
God is telling them.
26:15
What kind of coward would I be to read this book,
26:18
believe that I have the answer,
26:21
and not tell them?
26:24
Because you want to tell me God is love
26:26
and God is only love.
26:28
No, God is not only love.
26:33
and come up with that conclusion.
26:37
And frequently, people say, what do you mean?
26:39
We're being conformed to this world.
26:45
People don't even know what they're supposed to hide
26:46
from me as a pastor.
26:49
They come up and they're like,
26:49
oh, would you pray for me and my girlfriend?
26:53
and we're hoping that we get this mortgage.
26:57
And I'm like, oh, you made my prayer list.
27:00
You made the top of my prayer list.
27:04
It won't be praying for your mortgage.
27:08
They don't even know they're not supposed to tell me.
27:12
And then when I sit, I come alongside
27:14
and I say, hey, we want to share with you.
27:16
We love you.
27:17
We want to share with you what God's word says.
27:20
We want to make sure you're not being conformed
27:22
to this world.
27:24
They tell me, oh, can my parents come?
27:26
Because my parents are telling us not to get married.
27:38
Parents, we've been so conformed to this world
27:42
and we've seen so much heartache in this world
27:52
because we're being conformed to this world.
27:58
There's a pressure point.
27:59
Well, I don't want to see them get divorced.
28:01
I don't want to see them get divorced either.
28:04
Well, I don't want to see their heart broken.
28:06
Well, I think it's too late for that.
28:08
If this doesn't work out, it's going to be a heartbreak.
28:18
What do you mean?
28:19
The philosophy of this world.
28:21
Well, if two people love each other
28:24
it's all right.
28:26
No, it's not all right.
28:29
It's all right in marriage.
28:31
That's when it's all right.
28:34
Marriage between a man and a woman,
28:36
that's when it's all right.
28:38
Why?
28:39
This is what the scripture is calling us to.
28:42
It's telling us, don't be conformed to this world,
28:45
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind
28:48
so that you may test and discern what the will of God is,
28:52
what is good and acceptable and perfect.
29:07
We are to be transformed.
29:11
is we are to continue to be transformed day after day,
29:15
more and more.
29:16
It's actually a root word for metamorphosis.
29:19
We're to be changed.
29:21
These things are coming in that are renewing our mind.
29:24
Well, what are those things?
29:31
Church, let's get real.
29:32
People tell me, Roy, I don't have enough time.
29:34
I'm just so busy.
29:35
I don't have enough time to read God's word.
29:37
I'm like, guys, you can grab your phone
29:39
and your phone can read God's word to you.
29:42
You can pick what voice you want.
29:43
You can pick what voice you want to read God's word to you.
29:45
You can pick a British voice if you want.
29:50
I didn't know there was a difference.
29:53
You can pick an Australian voice to read it for you.
29:55
You can pick 1.0 speed.
29:58
You can pick 1.25 speed.
30:03
You can have it connect to your car
30:05
and you get in your car and your car turns on
30:07
and it just starts reading you God's word.
30:11
No, my whole life is just so centered around my family
30:14
and my work that I don't have one minute of the day
30:20
I don't believe you, but something's wrong.
30:26
Every study says that we're on devices multiple hours a day.
30:36
that many of us are doing together is 12 minutes a day.
30:40
And you'll finish the Bible in a year.
30:46
How do we control our thoughts
30:50
through this renewing of our mind?
30:52
How do we control the attitudes
30:53
through this renewing of our mind?
31:02
Please don't give God just the one hour.
31:03
of your life.
31:06
so that you can study God's word
31:14
That's how we renew our mind.
31:24
These are how we take God's word in
31:27
and we pray over it and we pray about it
31:30
and we ask for the Holy Spirit to reveal it.
31:33
And then we go to a friend's,
31:34
hey, I'm not sure I understand this.
31:36
Do I have the correct interpretation of this?
31:38
What have you heard?
31:39
What do you know?
31:40
What have you studied?
31:42
And that's what it's about.
31:43
It's about being in this community
31:44
where we grow in God's word
31:45
and we grow in community.
31:48
Because we all know we're being called
31:59
And then it goes on and it says
32:01
that we may discern the will of God.
32:05
I wanted to say to that young man,
32:10
if we were in God's word together,
32:11
we know that you're supposed to be married
32:13
before you live like a married person.
32:20
We can have God's word
32:22
that clearly tells us he created this
32:25
and he created this for this reason.
32:26
And he created this for this reason.
32:29
to help them to ascertain, to know.
32:37
So we can test your idea.
32:39
We can test your idea of what you want to do
32:41
against the scripture.
32:43
And it will help us discern what is good.
32:50
That good doesn't just describe God's will.
32:52
It will help us learn what is good.
33:00
what is acceptable to the Lord.
33:04
And it will help us to be that perfect tool.
33:10
The connotation here from the scripture
33:13
is that the perfect tool for what is needed
33:15
for that moment in your life.
33:18
When we have this,
33:20
when our minds are being renewed
33:21
and we're resisting the conformity of this world,
33:27
we can take what's happening
33:30
and we can run it through this
33:32
and we can know that's not good.
33:36
That's not acceptable.
33:40
This is going to hurt me
33:41
from being the perfect tool,
33:43
the right tool that God has for me.
33:46
He has for me to be in his will
33:50
that we get to do these things.
33:52
But if I do this, it hinders that.
34:02
so what's God's will for my life?
34:10
by the mercies of God,
34:20
which is your spiritual worship.
34:26
On this other side of that coin,
34:28
do not be conformed to this world,
34:31
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind
34:36
that by testing,
34:40
you may discern what is the will of God,
34:43
what is good,
