So anyone who has ever raised a toddler

knows the specific type of panic

that comes when they discover the joy of climbing.

A child will scramble up onto a coffee table,

a tall garden wall, a playground ledge,

look down and suddenly realize

they are higher than their little legs can handle.

And you watch their eyes go wide

as fear sets in.

Maybe for us as parents too.

But then they look down

and they see their father standing there,

or their mom, with their arms outstretched.

The mom or dad doesn't just say,

hey, good luck getting down.

You know, that's not what a good parent does.

They reach out, they wrap their hands

securely under their arms

and pulls them close.

In that instant, the child doesn't have to figure out

how to balance.

They don't have to carry their own weight,

they just let go because they trust

the hands that are carrying them.

So many of us walk into this room

this morning carrying the weight of the world.

It's on our shoulders, it's in us.

Trying to hold our families together,

hold our careers together,

hold our mental health together.

But Psalm 139 this morning invites us

to a totally different reality.

And God knows us completely, surrounds us entirely,

and hymns us in before and behind.

You don't have to hold your life together today

because He holds it all.

And we're going to dig into that this morning.

This psalm we're going to dig into, Psalm 139.

So if you have your Bibles, go ahead and turn there.

Psalm 139 is where we're going to plant.

I'll have a couple other verses I'll be reading,

but Psalm 139 is where we'll be.

This is the final part

of the Davidic collection of psalms.

It's this last collection,

David penned this psalm,

and it's meant to be sung.

It's meant to draw attention to the God

who is there and holds it all,

that holds you, that knows you,

that sees you, that sees you,

that is ever present with you

no matter where you go.

The God that judges evil,

that also searches everything,

every single one of us.

So I'm going to turn over to Psalm 139.

Again, I ask you to do the same.

I'm going to read it out loud.

I want us to hear the words of this psalm.

Psalm 139, it says this.

O Lord, you have searched me and know me.

You know when I sit down and rise up.

You discern my thoughts from afar.

You search out my path and my lying down

and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue,

behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You hem me in, behind and before,

and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.

It is high.

I cannot contain it or attain it.

Where should I go from your spirit

or where shall I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there.

If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.

If I take the wings of the morning

and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me

and your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me

and the light about me be night.

Even the darkness is not dark to you.

The night is bright as the day

for darkness is as light with you.

For you form my inward parts.

You knitted me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works.

My soul knows it very well.

My frame was not hidden from you

when I was being made in secret,

intricately, if I could say that word,

woven in the depths of the earth.

You saw your eyes,

saw my unformed substance.

In your book they were written,

every one of them, the days that were formed for me,

as yet there was none of them.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God.

How precious to some of them.

If I could count them,

they would be more than the sand.

I awake and I am still with you.

Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God.

Oh, men of blood, depart from me.

They speak against you with malicious intent.

Your enemies take your name in vain.

Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?

And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?

I hate them with complete hatred.

I count them my enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart.

Try me and know my thoughts

and see if there be any grievous way in me.

And lead me in the way everlasting.

There's so much beauty in this psalm.

It's a psalm of comfort, a psalm of remembrance,

a psalm of worship.

It's an imprecatory psalm.

In other words, it's a psalm

praying against the enemies of God.

But there's something else here in this psalm.

It's a scary psalm.

It's a serious psalm.

But you think, wait, a scary psalm?

I've always read this and it has,

especially if I see it on a wall of like somebody's house

or over in Hobby Lobby, it's got flowers all over it

and it's beautiful, right?

I mean, that's...

That's the context of this psalm.

This is a psalm that should actually bring us

to the fear of God that brings us to wisdom as well.

As we look at this psalm, really any part of scripture,

there's two questions we should always be asking.

Number one, what does this passage teach me about God?

And number two, what does this passage teach me about me

or humanity at large or all of us?

The commentator said it so well

that this psalm sings the truth of Hebrews 4.13.

It says,

But all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him

to whom we must give account.

See, David knew and we must know that wrong ideas about God

will inevitably lead us to wrong ideas about ourselves.

Wrong thinking can lead to wrong decisions,

to the wrong path resulting in wrong eternal destiny.

I always call it stinking thinking.

This psalm has a lot to teach us.

It has a lot to say about the greatness of our God.

It has a lot to say about the importance

and the significance of God.

It has a lot to say about the importance of God.

It has a lot to say about the importance of God.

It has a lot to say about the importance of God.

sanctity of every human life from the moment of conception to the moment of death. As another

commentator says, Psalm 139 puts God's claim on every nook and cranny of the universe. So I want

to dive into it. The first, I mean, there's the reality that the first six verses, God is omniscient.

We're going to talk about our omni-God today because we see it in this entire passage. God

is omniscient. That means God knows everything. There is not one thing on the face of the earth

that God is not aware of. He's an omni-God and it starts with his knowledge. So what does it mean

that God would search us and know us? It means that he knows your heart. He knows everything

that's in the nooks and crannies of your life and in your heart. He knows that about you already.

The good, the bad, the ugly, your past, your present, your future, he knows it all.

And you know something? He still loves you. He knows that thing that you don't want anybody else

to know about you. He knows it already and he still died for you. He loves you that much.

And as we go through what David is saying about this omni-God, we will be comforted and we will

honestly remember why we are to fear the Lord and why it's the beginning of wisdom.

I mean, he knows everything about you, your dreams, your fears, your struggles, your loves,

your desires, your sins, your failures, how you really actually think.

Not just how you want others to perceive you. He knows your actions too, whether they're out there

for everyone to see or for those things that are done in secret. There is nothing that is hidden

from God. Nothing's hidden from him. He knows where you rest. He knows where you go. He knows

the path that you take in every area of life. He knows your ways. He sees it all. And there's a

side to this where there's a huge comfort to this. He completely sees you. There's also a side to this

there's a conviction to this. He completely sees you. It's both things. He knows your words. He knows

what you say again, both in public and in private. Even what you said about your boss this week or

your spouse or your kids or the government, any of those things, every word. I mean, this is even

crazier. Every word spoken is known by God. Even before we speak it, even before it comes out of

our mouth, it's known by God. He knows your conversations. He knows the conversations had

about you behind closed doors.

He knows it. He knows everything about your life. You name it. He knows it. Your relationships,

your finances, your career. He knows it. He knows how they're going. He knows where things are a

struggle. He's before you and he is after you. His hand is on you, whether you realize it or not.

He knows the entire course of your life. David finishes this section with a comment about how

wonderful for me, his thoughts, how his knowledge is too wonderful for him. And we often stop there

and we're like, oh, it's wonderful. Again, Hobby Lobby picture. These thoughts are so wonderful.

Isn't it just wonderful, though, that God does know everything about us? I mean, it actually is a

wonderful thing. He's in control and he's going to take care of us. It may not turn out the way we

anticipated. It may not look at all the way we wanted it to. But when we surrender to the Lord,

we know it can and will be good in his time. He's going to guide us. He's going to protect us. These

things are true and are absolutely wonderful. But this isn't necessarily what David is saying here.

He's declaring that his mind is blown. He cannot

understand how this works. This isn't how humanity works. It's unattainable for us. It's a thought too

wonderful, too high. He cannot grasp it. It's too big. Consider this from A.W. Tozer in The Knowledge

of the Holy, which, by the way, it's a little book. It's a great book. The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W.

Tozer. You want to get to know a little bit more about who God is? Read that book. Unfortunately,

it's one of those little books that you're going to have to read like 10 times because it's thick

in knowledge, too. It's little, but it's thick in knowledge. But this is what he says. To see

that God is omniscient is to say that he possesses perfect knowledge and therefore has no need to

learn. See, sometimes we try to make God feel like us. God does not need to learn a thing about you.

He knows you. But it's more. It's to say that God has never learned and he never can learn.

The scriptures teach that God has never learned from anyone. From there, it is only a step to the

conclusion that God can't learn. Could God at any time or in any manner receive into his mind

knowledge that he didn't possess and that he hadn't had from all of eternity? If he did that, he would be

imperfect and he would be less than himself. To think of a God who must sit at the feet of a teacher,

even though that teacher may be an archangel or a seraph, is to think of someone other than the

most high God, the maker of heaven and earth. I'm going to stop here. I just got more to say.

But think about it. If we think incorrectly about God, it changes how we live our lives.

If we think we serve a God that has to learn something, then maybe we have something to teach

him. And yet, how many of us live that way? God, you don't really know my situation. See,

I do and I kind of want it to be this way. And come on, we all

do it, right? Every single one of us does it. I do it all the time, just so you know.

He can't learn. Again, going back, if we don't think rightly about God, it changes

how we live our lives. God perfectly knows himself and being the

source and author of all things, it follows that he knows all that

can be known. And this he knows instantly and with the fullness of perfection

that includes every possible item of knowledge concerning everything

that exists. Again, I almost thought about titling this message with just

the mind-blown emoji. That would be the title of

the message. That's what this is about. He would have knowledge about everything that

exists or could have existed anywhere in the universe at any time in the past

or that may exist in centuries or ages yet unborn. He knows it all. God

knows instantly and effortlessly all matter and all matters, all

mind and every mind, all spirit and all spirits,

all being and every being, all creaturehood and all creatures,

every plurality and all pluralities, all law

and every law.

All relations, all causes, all thoughts, all mysteries,

all enigmas, all feeling, all desires, every

unuttered secret, all thrones and dominions,

all personalities, all things visible and invisible in heaven and on earth,

motion, space, time, life, death,

good, evil, heaven and hell. God knows it all.

He knows it all. Because God knows all things perfectly, Tozer says,

he knows no thing better than any other thing. He

knows all things equally well. He never discovers anything. He's never surprised

or amazed. He never wonders about anything, nor except

when drawing men out for their own good, does he seek information or ask

questions. He doesn't ask questions of us because he doesn't know us. He asks questions

of us so we can know ourselves and so we can learn about him.

So when that thing surprised you, it didn't surprise him. We've got to know

that. This is our omniscient God and this is who that worthy name

is that we just worship.

So he's our omniscient God. God is also everywhere. He's omnipresent.

David moves to this next. He's ultimately saying that there's nowhere

he can ever go from God's presence. If you go to heaven, he's

there. If you go to the place of the dead, he's there. When you get up in the morning,

when you go to bed at night, in the depths of the sea, when everything is encompassing

you, he is present with you. When you feel like

darkness is enveloping you, even dark is light to him. It's like he's

got godly night vision glasses or

something. See, there's a part of this section where I'm like, God is always

present and I can never get away from him. That's awesome.

There's also a part of it that goes, God is always present and I can never

get away from him. Also kind of a scary thing. Another commentator said,

we may ignore, but we can nowhere evade the presence of God.

The world is crowded with him. What an interesting way of putting it.

He walks everywhere incognito. But David says something really interesting

in verse 7. He says,

What does he mean by that? That caused me to ask myself and I want to ask you the same

question. And you have to be honest with yourself. Have you ever felt like you wanted

to flee God? I have. Times of shame. Times of anger.

Times where I felt like life wasn't being fair. Times of frustration. Times I

don't understand. Maybe that's where you are today. Maybe life hasn't been going the way that you

wanted it to. Maybe it feels like the walls are closing in around you. Maybe it feels like

the people around you aren't there for you that's supposed to be. Maybe money's tight. It's just not

fair. God, when will you show up? Maybe you won't. You just want to be alone. And really, God, what in

the world are you doing? You can't get away from God. There are times with God and his presence

is such a comfort. And there's so many of those times. But I've had times where I just simply

don't want to hear what God has to say, if I'm honest. I think we got to be honest about it,

right? There's times we just don't want to hear what God has to say. I don't want another verse

or another pastor or another Christian to tell me how I should feel or act. We've been there,

right? I've had times where I'm just flaying around. I'm just ticked off. And I'm just,

ah, just so frustrated. I just want to throw punches, right? Here's what God does in those

moments. He doesn't leave you. When you're in the dark, he stays by your side. When you don't see a

way out, he's not surprised. He brings light to you when you need it most. When you're throwing

punches, even when you don't want anything to do with him until you can hear his heartbeat,

the picture I've got is like, you see it in like movies and different, and you probably maybe

you've had the situation where you're just so mad at somebody for something and you just come up

and this person, you're just kind of hitting him in the chest and hit him in the chest. And this person

loves you so much that you're just so ticked off. But here's the deal. God will take that

because he took that. And when we come to him and we're just so upset, you know what God does?

He wraps his arm around us until we can finally hear his heartbeat because his presence never

leaves us. It never leaves us till we remember that he loves us, even though everything around

us is crashing around us. And he holds us. God's hand will always,

leads you through and sometimes out. Hear what I'm saying in that. So often we're like, God,

change my circumstances. God's saying, your circumstances is how I'm molding you to look

more like my son. Even as your pastor, I sit here and go, I don't like that statement. I don't like

it when I have to change that way. We have a good father who doesn't leave us or forsake us. He will

always lead you through, sometimes out. Let me remind you, God is not afraid of your questions or your

struggle. He's not ever telling you to stay away. He's telling you to bring it all to him. The good,

the bad, the ugly, it doesn't matter what it is. Bring it to him. He's with you. He is presence.

I love this. I read another commentator. He had this little phrase. God's presence is coming at

you all the time, coming at us all the time in every season, every victory and every failure

and every great moment. And even in your worst moments, he's there and he's never sorry that

he died for you ever. He's omniscient. He's omnipresent. He's omnipresent. He's omnipresent.

But here's the kicker. God can do anything. He's omnipotent. He is all-powerful too. He's all-powerful

too. God can and does anything. He created you. God knows you better than you know yourself because

you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Jeremiah 1, 4-5 says this,

I made every intricate, intricate, I can't, that word always gets me, every intricate detail

of your conception and your development. Just like you look at a piece of art and marvel at it and

its creator, this is where the rubber meets the road. When you look in the mirror, you should have

the same feeling. God created you as his masterpiece. That's a hard one for me to say because that's not

what I see either. God's really getting into our lives today, isn't he? I love this perspective.

Paul contains information equivalent to a library of 1,000 volumes or 600,000 printed pages with

500 words on every page. At conception, one embryo has the equivalent of 50 times the amount of

information contained in the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. Conception. And David is simply

awestruck in amazement as he looks at God's creation. God has known you and seen you since

before you were born. Before you were completely formed, God was with you and he held you. He knew

every day you would live. Nothing is hidden from you. God is with you. God is with you. God is with

hidden from God.

And I go back to Hebrews 4, 13,

no creature is hidden from his sight.

We're all naked and exposed to the eyes of him

to whom we must give an account.

When we hear that in the context of Psalm 139,

yes, we're gonna give account,

but God looks on us with love and through love

because of the cross of Jesus Christ.

That's how God sees us.

How do we know this?

He finishes his section with verses 17 to 18.

Let's have those on the screen.

It says, how precious to me are your thoughts, O God.

How vast is the sum of them.

If I would count them, they are more than the sand.

I awake and I am with you.

God has a plan for each and every one of us

in the good and in the rough

because he's thinking about us.

His thoughts for you are uncountable.

They're precious to David and they should be for you.

David is continuing his being mind blown, mind blown emoji.

Another commentator said this really well too.

It's interesting to think about.

Given the larger context of verses one to 18,

this is better translated though as,

how difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts

about me, O God.

Why would you even want to think about me, David is saying.

And not only do you think about me,

your thoughts for me are more than the grains of salmon

of the sea, of the ocean, of the beaches.

The psalmist confesses a true sense of awe

at the vastness of God's thoughts about him.

And in verse 18, it says, I awake.

And we can think about that as when you awake in the morning,

God is still with you.

But some translators think that David is actually talking about

that when you awake from death, God is still with you.

Remember even the place of the dead, Sheol?

God is there.

No matter the case, God is ever present with you

if you know Jesus as your savior.

He's present with all of us, but he's specifically present

with those that know him as their savior.

He knows everything, he can do anything,

and he is everywhere at all times.

He is our omni-God.

And then we get to the last few verses of this chapter,

of this psalm.

God's gonna take care of even his enemies in due time.

He will.

In light of everything David is in wonder about God,

he wonders why God hasn't yet taken care of God's enemies

and probably his own enemies.

And God will deal with those that oppose him.

And David's description is particularly striking

because these men are wicked murderers.

They're bloodthirsty men who rightly deserve God's judgment.

David doesn't want to have anything to do with them.

He says, stay away from me.

They're evil in their actions.

These men are also evil with their words.

They use religion in their evil schemes.

They use the name of God for false and deceptive purposes.

They're religious liars and hypocrites.

These men are evil in their agenda.

To put it simply, they hate the Lord.

Their plans and their goals are not his.

They rebel against God.

They rebel against the Lord.

We see that today.

God is ever present.

I want to add something though here as your pastor

because we have to be careful with this one.

In verse 20 it says,

your enemies take your name in vain.

The name of God is holy and reverent and righteous.

We better be careful when we invoke it.

I hear, and I'm throwing it out there this morning

because I love you.

I hear the comment,

oh my God, in our lobby on Sunday mornings.

His name is more reverent than curse word.

And when we say, oh my God,

would you say that?

Like, my mom's name is Charlotte.

Oh my, Charlotte!

Would you say your mom's name that way?

But we take God's name in vain all the time.

His name should be in our mouths when we worship him,

not as a throwaway word.

Because how can we sound like the enemies of God

as his people?

We've got to be careful.

Start thinking about that.

How God the Spirit might want to change that in our own lives.

The man David comes in and he says,

what do we do with this complete hatred that David has

for these people?

Because aren't we supposed to love them?

Love your enemies?

Curse, you know, be kind to those who curse you?

Pastor John Piper helps us a little bit here.

He says, this is a kind of hate for the sinner

that may coexist with pity

and even a desire for their salvation.

You may hate spinach without opposing its good use.

But he says, there may come a point

when wickedness is so persistent and high-handed

and God-despising that the time of redemption has passed

and there only remain irremediable wickedness and judgment.

We will grant to the psalmist, usually David,

who speaks under the guidance of the Holy Spirit

as the foreshadowed Messiah and judge

the right to call down judgment on the enemies of God.

This is not personal vindictiveness.

It's a prophetic execution of what will happen the last day

when God casts all of his enemies

into the lake of fire in Revelation.

We would do well to leave such final assessments to God

and realize our own corrupt inability to hate as we ought to.

Let us tremble and trust God lest we fail

and find ourselves on the other side of the curse.

David's not saying he hates the people.

He's hating what they do.

We have to be really careful to not hate people.

But we can desire judgment on evil.

We want justice because our God

is a God of justice.

And then David ends where he started in the last two verses.

Search me, O God, and know my heart.

Pride me and know my thoughts.

See if there be any grievous way in me

and lead me in the way of everlasting life.

I mean, look at where David lands in this psalm.

Absolute awe of God's presence,

his omniscience, and his power.

David doesn't pull back in fear or hide in shame.

He opens up his hands and he prays,

such search me, O God, and know my heart.

See if there's any grievous way in me.

I like, I think it's the message translation that says,

see if there's any way in me.

See if there's any way in me that makes you sad.

See if there's any way in me that makes you sad, God.

Lead me in the way of everlasting life.

My friends, the God of the cosmos,

who knit you together in your mother's womb,

already sees the parts of your heart

you try to hide and walk away.

He already sees it.

He knows the secret fears, private struggles,

silent tears, the anger you've been

walking around with in the dark,

cannot flee from his presence.

You don't have to hide from his gaze, his eyes.

You don't.

Because of the cross of Jesus,

the eyes of the God who sees everything

looks at you with total grace and unfailing love.

If you're here this morning and you are here

because you're questioning who Jesus is,

I'm so glad you're here.

I'm so glad that you've come and had the guts here.

Even if you're watching online, I'm so glad that you are.

I want to tell you this morning,

there is a God who loves you so deeply.

Every single one of us is broken.

We're told in God's word and God tells us

out of his love for us that all have sinned

and fallen short of God's standard.

We've all sinned, including the guy doing the talking now.

None of us are perfect.

We've all broken God's law.

And God,

it would be fair to judge us for that.

When people do a crime, they do the time.

And we like that justice when it's for other people.

But when it's on us, grace, please.

Guess what?

God gives us his grace upon grace, upon grace,

because of the cross of Jesus.

Because God's word also tells us that the wages

or the payment of that sin, it's death.

And that death is both physical and spiritual.

All of us die because of sin.

But that death, we can die twice.

If we don't know Jesus and we say,

God, we don't want you.

He so loves us so much

that he won't give us any of himself.

But that means he doesn't give us any of himself.

And we have the choice to stay away from him

for all of eternity.

And my friends, that is the definition

of a very real place called hell.

To be separated from God for all of eternity.

Gives us that choice.

Because the payment of sin is death.

But, I've said often, I want to do a series

on the butts of scripture.

We'll leave that somewhere else.

But there's all kinds of but gods all over scripture.

But the free gift of God

is eternal life.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Not you're doing good.

Because none of us can do enough good.

Not you're being kind to everyone.

Because none of us can be so kind.

We need a savior.

His name is Jesus.

And he died on the cross for you and for me.

And if you would call on the name of the Lord.

Give him your life.

And if you believe that God raised him from the dead,

you will be saved.

Romans 10, 9 and 10.

You can be saved right where you sit.

And God's presence turns from

God is ever present with me

to

present with me.

Call on the name of the Lord today.

Be saved if you don't know him.

And there's others of us that have come in today exhausted.

You're trying to hold your family together.

You're trying to hold your career together.

You're holding your mind together.

I want to tell you, you can stop

swinging your arms.

You can stop running.

You can let your arms drop.

Because here's the deal.

You don't have to hold your life together today.

Because the God who sees every part of you

holds it all.

He is always present with you.

He holds us together.

I'm going to invite the worship team to come back up.

I'm going to sing a final song.

Sometimes we put so much effort

into trying to follow.

We're trying to follow God because we think we have to earn his love.

Or we have to try to get this put back together

so we can look right for this person

or for God.

We have to hold everything together.

And we're just playing whack-a-mole in our lives.

And God says, stop the striving.

I am with you.

Hey, I'm going to make it.

I'm not going to leave you.

I'm not going to forget you.

I'm not going to forsake you.

I'm not going to let you go.

I'm not going to let your family go.

So as we stand, let's go ahead and stand.

As we stand and sing,

I want to encourage you to bring every broken piece,

every secret thought,

every heavy burden

to the hands that carry us

and be mind-blown at the God that holds it together.

And if you want to come forward

and just spend some time in prayer,

you can kneel.

The worship team will step back.

I know sometimes we come up,

it feels like we're kneeling at the feet of the worship team.

We're not doing that.

But sometimes coming forward and just kneeling down

and saying, God, I need you.

Thank you for being present with me.

We can do that this morning if you want to.

The reality is, is we don't have to run anymore.

We don't have to strive anymore.

Let the God that holds you take your burdens from you.
