Looking at Psalm 73 we see how envy and comparison trap us into a mindset where we think the world can satisfy our hearts. The psalmist Asaph says he once envied the wicked, but realized that satisfaction is found in God alone. The message warns against treating God like an Amazon wishlist, calls listeners to turn to the Lord, and reminds us that God’s goodness is our portion forever. It asks us to spend some intentional time in prayer, asking the Lord to keep us focused on you for satisfaction.

I feel like as we walk through it as a church, as we walk through it together as a location,

there is more and more that I am seeing in my life

that is just in deep need of this time in prayer

and this time spent with the Lord that really comes in the Psalms.

And so we talked about how the Psalms are this direction

or these examples that are given to us that help us to understand how to pray,

how to worship, and how to go before the Lord.

And one of the things that I used very early on when we were talking about the Psalms

is this example of learning to write, right?

And how when we learn to write and we go to grade school, right?

They'll oftentimes give us a book of letters, right?

And that book of letters has like...

Like the dotted lines where you trace out letter by letter, right?

And you learn how to make the shapes of the letter.

And I know that as we walk through the Psalms,

there's sometimes this reality of,

man, I thought I knew how to pray.

And now we're going back through the Psalms and it's like,

man, I feel like maybe I need to shift the way that I pray.

In the same way this morning, someone asked me to write something for them.

And as I was writing, I was like,

Maybe I need to go back and learn how to form my letters correctly

because my handwriting is terrible, right?

And it's the same way as sometimes what happens is we get into these routines of prayer.

Not that they're bad, but we look and we say,

is that all that prayer is supposed to be?

And we look and say, no.

We're given in the Psalms this beautiful picture of all these vast prayers

and this vast depth of worship and lament as,

and sorrow is laid before the Lord and all these different things.

And so we look at the Psalms and we see this reality of how to go before the Lord.

And sometimes we realize, man, sometimes we've only been talking at the Lord.

Sometimes the Lord has become our Amazon wishlist where we go and we only ask him for things.

Or sometimes we go to the Lord and instead of asking him what he wants in our lives,

we just tell him, hey, here's what we're doing.

Bless this, Lord.

I pray that this is what happened.

But the reality is so often we're called to sin.

We sit before the Lord and conform ourselves to him.

And this morning, we're going to take a look at Psalm 73.

And if some of you around early on in the series,

you might remember me referencing this Psalm when we were walking through Psalm 37.

But this morning, I want to really take a more holistic look at this Psalm

where we see that this Psalmist,

he's struggling with this perspective of himself.

His mind.

And so he begins to lay out kind of this journey that he has walked through

as he's shifted his perspective and the desires of his heart

and what that means for us as believers today as we look to do the same thing in our world.

And so we're going to turn there, but we're going to pray first.

So if you bow your heads with me, we're going to turn to the Lord this morning.

Lord, we ask you for wisdom.

Lord, we turn to your word.

And we know that it is the source of wonderful truth.

Lord, we turn to your word.

And we know that you have called us to live according to your word, Lord.

And so we take our lives and we submit them to your word this morning.

Lord, I pray that you would help us to see our lives in a microscope.

Not that we feel bad about our lives, but instead we have a desire to honor you.

And to follow the ways that you call us to live in obedience to you.

And because it brings us great satisfaction and joy.

Lord, we love you and we worship you this morning.

In your precious and holy name, Jesus' name, amen.

So like I said, turn with me to Psalm 73.

We want you to have God's word.

We're going to be in a couple different places.

I only have Psalm 73 on the screen.

So you can keep your finger here or you can go up there.

But we're going to go to a couple different places.

I want you to actually turn there in your Bibles.

It's really important that you utilize your Bibles this morning.

But in Psalm 73, like I said, we see this is a Psalm of Asaph.

And he is talking about how he has had this one,

perspective and specifically how he had slipped into this trap or he had nearly stumbled all the

way into this trap, but he caught himself or he was caught by God and that transformed his outlook.

And so we're going to see this reality as we walk through it. We're going to walk through it piece

by piece. We're not going to read the psalm in its entirety. Feel free if you want to later today to

do that, but we're going to kind of chunk it up piece by piece. So starting in verse two, it says

this, but as for me, my feet had almost stumbled. My steps had nearly slipped for I was envious of

the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. And so he describes this trap that he

almost gets stuck in this mindset of envy, this heart of discontentment that when he looks around,

everyone else in the world around him, very specifically the wicked who he's talking about,

he sees things that would satisfy and he sees his life with a lack of satisfaction.

And so we see there is this first mindset in his journey where he almost gets caught up in,

it's this lost way of the world where he looks and he says, this is the mindset of the world.

And he begins to have that mindset in his heart. He looks and he says, I will be happy

if I only have what they have. I do not have satisfaction in my life. That is a recognition

that when envy steps into your life, you are recognizing I have a lack of satisfaction in

my life. And when I look out at the things that others have, I believe that that will

satisfy me. And this is such the mindset of the world. If you, if you don't see this in the world,

I'd encourage you the next time that you're sitting there frustrated at commercials,

watch commercials with that mindset in your eye. You can look and you see, oh, this car,

if I only have this car, if I only have this thing, or if I can only win big on this sports betting

app, if I can only have things easy, if I can only have things easy, if I can only have things easy,

and faster, if I can only have this thing to cut my yard, then I'll have more time to do the things

that I want. If I can only have this machine that cuts trees, I don't have to pay someone else to,

so I have more money and I can, I could do it the way I want it. If I only lose weight with this

diet or this piece of exercise equipment or this gym, if I can only lose the weight,

then I'll be happy and I'll be satisfied. If I only have this prescription drug that will take

care of me, then I'll be happy and I'll be satisfied. If I only have this prescription drug

that will take care of this problem in my life, and I ignore as they talk super, super, super fast

about all the side effects. The reality it boils down to is if you only do this, or if I only have

this thing, the reality is you will be satisfied. And the commercials, they try and paint this

dissatisfaction in our hearts, where we look and we say, I need that. That's the thing. That's the

thing that will make me satisfied, or at least that will be part of it. And so we're always told

that we need something for satisfaction. And our flesh only fuels this. Naturally, we want

things. When we look back all the way to the Garden of Eden, right? They wanted to be equal

with God. And Satan fueled that. Satan spoke into that, but there was this desire for more.

And our sinful nature has only pushed that from where they had it, which was,

the desire for God, to this desire for everything else. Satan twisted it. And then naturally,

as we look and we say, we want, we aren't satisfied, our eyes fill in the gaps.

Oh, look over there. They got something cool. I'd love that. Oh, man, they don't seem to be

having the car troubles that I'm having. Maybe I just need that car, or a newer car, or a nicer

car. Oh, you know, they don't have the back problems that I have, so I need that car.

I need to go see their chiropractor, right? Or I need to figure out what they're doing,

or that thing, right? There is this natural comparison in our lives, and we

compare. And so what Asaph says, he says, that was the trap that I almost stumbled into. And he

dives deeper into the mindset that he was beginning to have. As he looked at the world

and he saw the wicked, he saw these things that he felt like he needed that they had, but he saw

them as evil, messed up people. Jump down to verse four. He says this, for they, and you know he's

comparing because of that word they, they, they have, for they have no pangs until death. Their

bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are, and they are not stricken like the

rest of mankind. Therefore, pride is their necklace. Violence covers them as a garment.

Their eyes swell out through fatness. Their hearts overflow with follies. And some of you

in this room are like, well, I don't struggle with the same comparison that Asaph struggles with

because I don't want my eyes to swell out with fatness, right? Me either, right? But the reality

of what he's saying is that picture that he's giving is not to just call them fat and morbidly

obese. He's looking and saying they have in abundance. If only I could have in the abundance

like they have, then things would be better.

And I feel like I should have those things. Why do these wicked people who are doing all this evil

stuff, why do they have those things? And they seem to have satisfaction when they're a mess and

they're evil. I want those things. Those things should be satisfying me. I should have in abundance.

And what's interesting here is, I'm going to take a second and go off strip. This is

why so often health and wealth churches strive, or they thrive. This is why health and wealth

churches thrive. It's because they want to rectify this feeling. And they say, well, only if you give

enough to the church, then you will have an abundance. Only if you do these things, then God

will bless you financially. And they speak to the heart of flesh. But the reality here is not to give

into the trap. It's to recognize the trap. That's what he looks and he says, I almost fell into this

trap of envy, jealousy, comparison that leads us deeper and deeper and deeper into this mindset of

sin. Why? Because we're looking for abundance in the world to satisfy an eternal dissatisfaction

in our hearts. That desire in our hearts was in Adam and Eve. And where did they find that

satisfaction? Deep community with God as they walked with him in the garden. And

Satan twisted to give them dissatisfaction that says you can find that satisfaction

apart from God. You can find that on your own, in your own wisdom and knowledge. He doesn't want you

to eat of this fruit because then you will be like him. And so they look and say, we don't need God

to satisfy us. We can satisfy ourselves. And that mindset has continued to permeate through

humanity in that sin over and over and over and over. I don't need God to satisfy me. I can find

satisfaction here. I can find satisfaction in fame. I could find satisfaction if I just have a big

enough following on the internet. I can find satisfaction if I just have this many zeros in

my bank account. I can find satisfaction in anything other than God. I don't need God because

my satisfaction is in these things. And Asaph looks and he sees

this struggle in his life because he feels the dissatisfaction, which is real. Us as humanity,

we are dissatisfied with only humanity. That's how God created us to be in deep

relationship with him. He is the ultimate satisfier of our lives. But Asaph is falling

into this trap of the flesh where he looks, he says, all these things that they have, they must feel

satisfied because I look at them and I could just use all that stuff. But the truth that we have to

recognize is that we have to recognize that we have to recognize that we have to use all that stuff.

is, there is no satisfaction to be found in the world. As I've been thinking and wrestling with

this truth, one of the things that really struck me is that age-old like icebreaker question,

if you were given three wishes from a genie, what would you wish for? And I started to think about

how long would my three wishes keep me satisfied, right? And a lot of times when we think about

that question, we look to find the best loopholes to get the most bang for our buck with those

wishes. You can wish for anything in the world, and still we're wanting more. We're wanting to

push that to the nth degree. And I think it is so, you see that dissatisfaction in what the world

can provide so easily, because what is the first rule?

You always have to say, you can't wish for more wishes. Three wishes simply isn't enough. If that

doesn't show you, right, the dissatisfaction, the fact that we will never find satisfaction in the

world, there will always be something that comes up that we'll have to wait and use our wish for.

We can't wish for any amount of money, because we look at it and say, well, money can't solve my

health. Okay, well then I have to use a wish on my health. Well, my health doesn't solve the

relational problem in my life. I need solid relationships to fill my life, right? We just

go down the line, right?

Deed after need after need, that just one or just three wishes, they can't satisfy. So we need as

many as we possibly can. And even then, we won't find that satisfaction. And so this conclusion

comes to Asaph as he looks and he compares. He realizes this is a trap. And so he looks and he

says, something has to change. And we jump down. Verse 16. But when I thought how to understand

this, it seemed to me a weakness.

And I love that picture of Asaph just sitting there. And he's like, I'm going to figure this

out. Why am I feeling this way? Why am I feeling dissatisfied? And he sits down and he just starts

thinking of thing after thing after thing. And eventually he's like, I'm beat. It's like, dude,

you're just, it's like the thinker pose, right? He's just sitting there thinking and thinking

and he's just like, I'm so exhausted. I just can't seem to figure it out. And then verse 17.

Until I went into,

the sanctuary of God, then I discerned their end. He's like, I was struggling after struggling

after struggling, trying to figure out where this ended, right? Where, what, how much stuff

do I have to get until I'm satisfied? How many wishes does it take, right? To what end am I going

to look at these wicked people and always just be, I wish I had that. I wish I had that. I wish I had

that. I wish I had that. And he says, I was exhausted. I couldn't get to the end, but it

wasn't until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I discerned their end. Jump down to verse 27.

You see the next piece of what this looks like. What changed? Verse 27. For behold, those who are

far from you shall perish. You put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me,

it is good to be near God.

I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. Right? So there's this

description that he gives where he looks and he says, I was trying to figure it out. I had this

heart of jealousy. I had this heart of comparison. There was just envy was running rampant in my life.

And I realized that this dissatisfaction was there. And it changed when I encountered God.

When I had this encounter with God,

where I went in to the sanctuary of God, when God became a refuge in my life, and he began

to transform the way that I think. Because he looks and he says, instead of looking and saying

what they have versus what I have, he looks and he says, I have God. I am near to God.

He is my refuge. I am in his sanctuary. I have God.

He looks all the way back.

just imagine him thinking back to the Garden of Eden, like when he's thinking back, right? And

he's trying to trace this dissatisfaction. He's so exhausted, so exhausted, so exhausted. Then he

goes, he goes, Lord, help me. And God just says, look all the way back to Eden. When was their

satisfaction? When they were near to me. And he goes, oh yeah, oh yeah. I almost fell into that

trap. I almost pursued these things. I almost was tirelessly seeking these things that everyone

else has had. But Lord, as I walked into your presence, you reminded me simply of how good it is

to be near to you. This reality of you being a refuge, what does it do? It transformed his mind.

For us as believers today, this happens, this transformation happens as we put our faith in

the gospel, right? When we look back to the origins of sin, the origins of disobedience, right?

What led them from being cast out of the Garden of Eden? What led to sin permeating all of humanity?

You, me, whoever it is, it comes from a dissatisfaction, a desire to satisfy apart

from God. But because God loved us and he desired to reconcile us, he sent his son, Jesus Christ.

He looked and he said, I want to bring you satisfaction again. Think about the heart that

God has to say, I want to bring you satisfaction again. I want to bring you satisfaction again.

Say those things, right? When we offer someone something and they turn us down, and then we see

them wanting it later, we're like, oh, should have taken it when I offered, right? Or we want to say,

told you so, right? God looks and he says, not only will I provide, but I will call you. I will

look and say, come back, find great satisfaction again, and I'll provide the way, right? He sends

his son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect life, being both God and man. He goes to the cross,

he takes the punishment on himself, the punishment for our sin, which is eternal death, separation

from God. Goes to the cross, dies, on our third day, rises again from the grave, conquering that

punishment. Why? To redeem us. I love what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5, 16. Open your Bibles there,

I encourage you. We talk about how this gospel transformation plays out. We see that as we

confess with our mouth,

Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in our heart that he is risen from the dead. There is a

transformation that God produces in our souls. So this morning, if you have not received Jesus

Christ as your personal Savior, if you have not confessed with your mouth that Jesus Christ is

Lord, and believe in your heart that he is risen from the dead, my encouragement to you this morning

is to do that. I'd love to walk you through that. One of our deacons would love to walk you through

that, would love to answer your questions, talk to you more about that. If you are struggling with

that, but the reality is the restoration or this transformation has to first happen in your soul,

and that only happens through salvation. You will not find satisfaction unless you turn to the Lord

Jesus Christ and seek his satisfaction that he gives through the gospel. 2 Corinthians 5, 16-19

describes this transformation that happens immediately in our soul. Verse 16, from now on,

therefore, we regard no one,

according to the flesh, even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh,

we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ

reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. That is, in Christ, God was

reconciling the world.

To himself, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of

reconciliation. So he looks, he says, we were in need of reconciling with God. Why? Because we had

looked and said, we don't need you. We'll pursue satisfaction in our own. But Christ, through his

death and resurrection, reconciled us to God. And when he does that, we are made a new creation.

And that new creation, it starts with a regenerated,

Your soul is fundamentally changed when you receive Jesus Christ as Lord.

And through that regenerated soul, what happens is we find our mind beginning to be regenerated as well.

Turn to Romans chapter 12.

Those of you who have been here for a while, you know I struggle to stay out of Romans.

This morning, I find myself giving in.

Romans 12, 2, we see as we have this regenerated soul, but we have this fleshly body, right?

We still are alive.

We're people in this fallen world.

There is this battle that is going on internally where our soul is pulling us to be transformed by God,

and our flesh is pulling us to be conformed to the world, to go back to the way that we've traditionally done things.

And so Paul, as he's writing to this church that's in Rome, to the Romans, he looks and he says,

do not be conformed.

That's what he says.

Romans 12, 2.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

So he says the first battle that you have to wage in this war, as your soul is transformed

and your flesh is trying to get it to conform back,

you have to win this battle.

You have to win this battle of your mind.

He says,

So be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,

what is good and acceptable and perfect.

And so we see that is exactly what's happening in this psalm.

That as Asaph sits and he struggles with this reality,

and he feels this dissatisfaction,

and he looks everywhere else for it,

he has this encounter,

this encounter with God,

his soul is being transformed.

He is fighting this battle of his mind.

And he's testing, he's looking and he's saying,

this, these thoughts, this desire of my heart,

this reality that I'm constantly finding myself giving into,

does not fit with the reality of God.

This is not God's will for my life.

That I look and I want satisfaction from wickedness,

wicked, worldly, lost people.

And so I look at my life and I say,

my life is not congruent.

It's not parallel.

It's not a partner with the will of God.

It is actually in opposition with the will of God,

because it wants to do exactly what my flesh wants to do.

Find satisfaction apart from God.

And so he looks and he exhorts himself.

Jump back to Psalm 73.

Look at verse 23.

And when I,

when I say that word exhort,

what I mean there is basically he tells,

he's telling himself,

he's preaching to himself.

Sometimes you guys will come up to me after the guy and be like,

just, I feel like you're preaching directly at me.

Like you're speaking directly into my life.

You know who I'm preaching to?

Like almost every Sunday, me, right?

There is a need in all of our lives to preach to ourselves,

to look at God's word.

And then to,

to look at our lives.

And when we see something that doesn't match up to look and say,

all right, let's, let's figure this out.

This is what I'm called to do.

Let me produce.

Let me look to God and ask him desperately to produce these things in my life.

Let me remind myself of the characteristics of a believer that I should be demonstrating in my life.

Now that's not to say it's all on you.

That's not to say,

Oh, just pull up your spiritual bootstraps and get to work.

But sometimes we need to remind ourselves,

remind ourselves of the truth of God's word.

And that's what,

that's what Asaph does here.

He says,

verse 23 of Psalm 73.

I am continually with you.

You hold my right hand.

You guide me with your counsel.

you will receive me to glory.

Whom have I in heaven but you.

And there's nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

my flesh and my heart may fail.

But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Sometimes that needs to be a prayer in your life.

A prayer to remind you that that is true for you.

It's easy to contradict those things in our hearts, right?

When we're scrolling through Amazon Prime Day,

we're like, oh, I could use that, right?

The house could really use this.

We could take care of some things here, right?

And that feeling of dissatisfaction begins to creep up.

That feeling of, oh, that will fix it,

or that will do it, or this is here, right?

Whatever it may be, this thing, that thing,

the other thing, that feeling of dissatisfaction,

this envy, as it starts to rise up,

and we're like Asaph, we start to slip,

we start to stumble, we come back,

and we remind ourselves of these things,

we exhort ourselves.

You guide me with your counsel,

and afterward, you receive me in glory.

Whom have I in heaven but you?

And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

Sometimes we need to tell ourselves that,

even when we're not feeling that.

So we can say, all right, heart, let's get in line.

Let's remember what's true.

We may feel differently, we gotta remember what's true.

Same thing in our minds.

Man, my mind's beginning to wander.

I'm beginning to desire all besides you,

but no, the strength of my heart is you, God,

my portion forever.

There is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.

It's this.

It's this godly mindset, this heavenly mindset.

Why?

We begin to recognize where our satisfaction comes,

and we remind ourselves.

Dissatisfaction is creeping up in my life?

Turn to the Lord.

Envy's starting to creep up in my life?

There is nothing that I'm seeing in this person

or that that person has or that this person looks like.

Even if I looked like that person,

I'd still be dissatisfied.

Why?

Because my satisfaction,

it's in God alone.

Heart don't wander.

Lord, produce that in me, right?

Turning immediately in prayer.

Lord, produce this in me.

Lord, don't let me get caught up.

Don't let me get distracted.

Don't let me get caught up.

Lord, remind me of the truth.

You are my satisfaction.

And so, my encouragement to you this week,

like many weeks in this Psalm series,

is to spend some intentional time in prayer.

And some of you may hear that,

and you get really overwhelmed.

You're like, whoa, what is he asking me to do?

Maybe it for you, that's five minutes.

Some of you are prayer warriors in this room.

And when I say spend some time in intentional prayers,

you're gonna be in your prayer closet for an hour.

Way to go.

But some of you in this room, you're like,

man, I don't know how to do that.

Take five minutes.

Go out in the backyard, away from all the noises.

Sit in your car a couple minutes longer

when you get home from work.

Turn the radio off and pray to the Lord.

Say, Lord, help me be satisfied.

Lord, help me be satisfied with you, God.

Lord, am I satisfied in you?

Help me be satisfied in you, Lord.

There's a song that I always love,

and the last line of it always chokes me up.

That's why I didn't have Rebecca do it this morning,

'cause I would end up crying, and I don't love crying.

But the last line, I don't know if this is the exact words,

but the ones that go through my mind are,

if you never did another thing for me,

I will sing of the goodness of God.

And I choke up every time.

Man, I'm struggling this morning, even just saying it.

Because that's why I'm crying.

That's what a satisfied soul says to the Lord.

Lord, it's not, you're not my Amazon wishlist.

You're not my Santa Claus.

You're not, you don't have to keep doing things

to impress me, Lord, to satisfy me.

You alone, God, are satisfying to my soul.

hard to sing, right? But it's a wonderful reminder to our heart. It produces that godly mindset.

Lord, you have done it all. You are worthy of it all. You are magnificent and mighty, and it is

only good to be near to you. It is so good to be near to you. But if you never did another thing

for me, I'd still be satisfied. Let's pray together. Lord, you are wonderful satisfaction. Lord, our flesh,

our sinful selves, Lord, wants to pursue satisfaction from everything else, Lord.

Lord, but there's only dissatisfaction to be found in the world, because you alone are our source of

satisfaction. You alone are our source of forgiveness. You alone are our source of comfort. You alone

are our source of joy. You alone are the source of all these things,

Lord, that you produce in our lives. Pray that even as our flesh wants to pull us away, wants us to

deceive us, wants to get us to look elsewhere, Lord, I pray that you would keep us focused on you for

that satisfaction. Lord, I pray that we would have moments in our lives like Asaph, where we

look to the transformation of our minds, and as we discern, look to discern your will in our lives,

Lord, that we would come to this realization, oh, here are these things, these things that are

pulling us in this direction away from you, Lord. Pray that you would bless each one of us with some

time alone with you this week, whether that's five minutes, whether that's a couple hours, Lord, I pray

look and we say, Lord, help us to be satisfied, because you alone bring satisfaction. Lord,

we seek you. We seek your mind. We seek your heart, Lord, and we thank you for the

soul that you've regenerated and given to us through your son's death and resurrection. Lord,

we turn to you in all things, in your precious and holy name, Jesus' name.
