REACH, GATHER, GROW

Church

Josh Combs · Sunday, 14 September 2025 · Romans 1:12; 14:19; 15:2 · 35:20 · 5,233 words

Romans S21 · 1:12; 14:19; 15:2 Goodrich

Listen to this message

The sermon, based on Romans 1, explains that the church’s mission is to reach, gather and grow people in Christ through prayer, genuine community and mutual encouragement. It calls listeners to move beyond watching the gathering like a movie and instead pray for each other by name, welcome strangers, and share their own stories of God’s faithfulness. The pastor urges those who don’t yet know Jesus to turn to him in faith and be baptized, and challenges everyone to commit to intentional, relational involvement with fellow believers.

1:11
Thank you for being here. Honored to have you here on this Sunday.
1:15
If you're watching online, I want to welcome you as well.
1:18
Romans chapter 1, verse number 8 is where we're going to be in just a moment.
1:23
Last week, we began a series as we look at the vision of the church.
1:31
Unique about the vision of a church, it's not as if our elders and pastors sat down one day and said,
1:37
okay, let's decide what we'd like to do.
1:40
That's not where it came from.
1:42
We see in the Bible that Jesus...
1:48
that we are to be going into all the world, sharing the gospel, preaching the gospel.
1:54
And then those who come to faith in Christ, we are to be baptizing them in the name of the Father,
1:59
Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and then teaching them what Jesus taught the disciples.
2:06
So we articulate that here at the River.
2:09
You see it in print and shirts and in our lobbies.
2:13
You'll see the word reach, and you'll see gather and grow.
2:16
We talk about that often.
2:18
So you'll notice that we call this a gathering and not a service,
2:21
not because there's anything particularly bad or wrong about saying the word service at all,
2:26
unless you're on staff, and I get after those folks all the time.
2:29
But we call it a gathering because we believe that this is gathering of God's people.
2:35
Now, we know that there are some of you sitting in here,
2:37
some of you may be watching online right now who are not a follower of Jesus.
2:42
Friends or your family or your husband or wife or kids,
2:46
whoever it might be.
2:47
We brought you here, and we're so glad you're here,
2:50
and we hope that you'll come to know Christ.
2:52
But we know that this is primarily a gathering for Christians,
2:56
for people who are doing their best to follow Jesus with their life.
3:01
So it's kind of from that approach that we talk about a gathering.
3:05
Well, I grew up in church, and maybe you did as well.
3:09
I've been talking with some of my friends this week
3:11
and discovering that many of them grew up Lutheran.
3:14
I didn't grow up Lutheran.
3:16
Maybe you did.
3:17
I don't really know anything about what it means,
3:20
but it's interesting to hear how they grew up Lutheran
3:25
I was just having a conversation about that.
3:27
So when we gather with the church, we have different expectations,
3:34
or what the dress code is supposed to be.
3:37
When I grew up, if you were in church in jeans and an untucked shirt,
3:42
they may not have said it out loud, but you were definitely a sinner,
3:45
probably didn't know the Lord, right?
3:49
If you had a tattoo, definitely going to hell.
3:53
I mean, that's just the way I was raised.
3:54
So there were certain expectations of what was going to happen
3:57
and then certain expectations of the dress code and so forth.
4:01
Maybe you grew up a little more casual in church.
4:03
Maybe for you, you didn't grow up in church.
4:04
This is all new.
4:06
Like, what the heck's going on here?
4:07
I didn't know this is how it was going to be.
4:09
So there's a level of curiosity.
4:11
Then it extends to what the church should be busy doing.
4:15
I drive by, as you do as well, lots and lots of different churches.
4:18
I see the signs for what they're advertising.
4:20
I see the advertising going on.
4:22
And I think some churches are just intent on potlucking themselves to death.
4:30
And I'm going to be honest with you.
4:32
I do.
4:32
Where else can you get 12 different types of green bean casserole in one spot?
4:37
I love it.
4:38
I love it.
4:39
I love those things, and I grew up loving those things.
4:42
But sometimes you're like, okay, that's what the church is doing.
4:44
It's like, okay, what else is the church busy about?
4:47
It seems like churches are having craft shows and blood drives,
4:50
and I guess those things are good.
4:52
They have their place.
4:53
But what is the church supposed to be busy doing?
4:57
And that's kind of the answer.
4:59
We should answer that.
5:00
I just said the word answer.
5:02
Timing couldn't have been better.
5:06
What is the church supposed to be busy doing?
5:09
So let's look at Romans 1.
5:11
We're going to pick up in verse 8,
5:13
and we're going to see a few things that Paul writes to the Christians
5:16
in the city of Rome, kind of take from that some ideas
5:20
of what we as a church ought to be doing.
5:24
First, I thank my God through Jesus,
5:26
Christ, for all of you,
5:28
because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.
5:33
God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit
5:36
in the gospel of his Son,
5:44
So if you're taking notes,
5:46
you want to write down a few things from today.
5:48
The first is this.
5:49
I believe that we as a church ought to be praying for each other.
5:54
We ought to be praying for each other.
6:01
When you know someone,
6:06
When you don't know someone,
6:13
Things like, man, I hope they have a good week.
6:16
I hope they're doing okay.
6:18
That's not a bad thing to pray.
6:20
I do hope you have a good week,
6:22
and I hope you're doing okay.
6:30
The thing about prayer is prayer forces,
6:41
care, commitment for each other.
6:43
Meaning, I'm going to talk to you.
6:48
By the way, this is your opportunity to learn that.
6:51
This is a name that you have forgotten four times.
6:55
So you're welcome for that.
6:57
But we pray by name.
7:01
God, I just want to talk to you about so-and-so.
7:04
They were sharing with me on Sunday a need,
7:07
a need in their family,
7:08
a need in their life.
7:18
and I was also the men's pastor.
7:25
And I remember this guy came to my class,
7:29
and I was really surprised.
7:30
I was really surprised that he came,
7:31
because I knew his wife hated my guts.
7:36
Like, I knew she did not like me at all.
7:39
And so here he comes into my class,
7:41
and I thought, this is very interesting.
7:43
And he kept coming to my class.
7:45
Well, I had made a commitment
7:46
that all my guys that came to my class,
7:48
I was going to pray for them by name every single week.
7:51
So I had a little paper on my wall in my office,
7:55
and so there was the guy's name.
7:56
And then I also was going to pray for their spouse
7:59
and for their kids.
8:00
So I'm praying for all the guys.
8:01
I'm praying for their wives.
8:02
I'm praying for their kids.
8:02
I'm praying for their kids.
8:03
So I go to write down his name,
8:05
and then I go down to write his wife's name.
8:09
Now, I don't know about you.
8:11
Praying for people who like you is kind of nice, right?
8:17
I look around the room,
8:18
and there are people that I know
8:19
really genuinely care and love for me.
8:21
Cindy, I have no problem praying for you,
8:23
because I know that you love me.
8:25
But praying for someone that doesn't like you,
8:30
you're like, go through your list.
8:34
I'm praying for this guy, praying for this guy.
8:36
And then you get to that name,
8:37
and you're like, Lord, bless them.
8:43
I don't know what that means.
8:46
I don't want to bless them so much.
8:50
I don't want to bless them so much, right?
8:51
It's a struggle.
8:54
So I found myself praying for this guy and for his wife.
8:59
Something started to happen, not with them, but with me.
9:08
because the prayer request started to be specific.
9:12
Here I am praying for them.
9:17
I found myself wanting to talk to them.
9:21
Hey, I've been praying for you.
9:24
How's it going?
9:25
I've been praying about this in your life.
9:28
What's happening with that?
9:33
knowing this person didn't like me,
9:35
but I had been praying for them.
9:36
And I'm not trying to say,
9:40
but I learned a great lesson then,
9:51
You start to care in ways for them.
9:54
That's why Jesus said, pray for your enemy.
9:58
Do good to those who do bad to you.
10:02
Paul says here, I'm praying for you.
10:05
He says, so that without ceasing,
10:09
The church ought to be praying for you.
10:11
We're praying for each other.
10:12
Prayer does a few things.
10:16
It deepens our relationships with one another.
10:20
One of the greatest things that people do for me
10:23
is pray for me.
10:24
One of the greatest blessings I have as a pastor
10:28
when someone comes up to me and says,
10:30
hey, we prayed for you this week.
10:37
So first thing we see there in verse eight and nine
10:38
and into 10 is we see the church
10:41
needs to be praying for each other.
10:43
Look at verse 10.
10:45
Paul says, I'm always praying for you.
10:47
And I'm asking that somehow by God's will,
10:52
I may now at last succeed in coming to you
10:57
for I long to see you.
11:00
Paul knew he's distant from them.
11:05
Some of the Christians in Rome he had met before,
11:08
others he did not know.
11:11
He says, listen, I am hoping, I'm praying for you,
11:14
but I'm hoping to be there with you.
11:20
There is no substitute for being together.
11:31
Now, everyone who's sitting in this room,
11:34
I'm gonna talk to the people
11:35
who are watching online right now.
11:38
Now, you might be like, yes, preach, preach, get them, pastor.
11:41
Your turn's coming, okay?
11:43
If you're at home right now or you're on break
11:49
or whatever life may be and you're watching online,
11:52
you're sick or maybe you're older
11:55
and you're staying at home, thank you for watching.
12:03
and all kinds of different things work very hard
12:05
because we want to make sure that you're safe.
12:07
We want to make sure that you can be part of this.
12:09
Back in the day, it was a cassette ministry
12:17
and now we don't have to do those things.
12:18
It can be live right now on your television,
12:21
which is awesome.
12:23
But for some of you, you're watching online right now
12:27
and it has nothing to do with sickness.
12:30
It has nothing to do with being elderly.
12:33
It has everything to do with being lazy.
12:37
You need to be here.
12:38
Not because there's a magic room or a magic,
12:42
or a magic building or God can't meet with you at home
12:45
or in the woods or wherever you happen to be right now.
12:48
The idea is that this is a gathering of God's people together.
12:56
Now, those of you sitting in this room, you're like,
12:57
yes, I'm here, got that box checked.
13:02
Problem is, some of us gather with the church
13:07
in almost the exact same way we go to the movies.
13:11
We come in, we get our snacks,
13:16
we look for the seat that we want
13:18
and we hope no one sits too close to us
13:24
You might make a cordial nod
13:30
to the church and say,
13:30
right, a row fills up.
13:33
Hey, can I scoot in there?
13:34
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead.
13:46
and you might hear someone's laugh
13:52
Ah, we're doing that.
13:54
But you're not that close to anybody
13:55
or there's a moving scene.
14:01
or there's something that's scary
14:03
so you, ha, ha, together, right?
14:05
But it's not much beyond that
14:06
because when it's over and the credits start,
14:09
if there's not an end,
14:10
you pick yourself up,
14:12
you shuffle out,
14:13
you might bump into someone.
14:14
Oh, excuse me, after you.
14:15
You go ahead.
14:15
You go down the steps first.
14:16
I'll wait here.
14:18
And then you walk out the door,
14:20
you get in your car
14:27
I think some, that's what this is.
14:32
We came in.
14:39
and then someone sat close to us
14:42
and we're like, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
14:45
I know I have it.
14:47
They sat close to us.
14:51
We sang some songs.
14:53
We're going to listen to a guy talk for about,
14:56
well, who knows, right?
14:57
We're going to have an experience together.
15:03
We're going to stand up,
15:06
We might smile at someone
15:07
and then we go home.
15:14
the same way we go to the movies.
15:16
It's like something we observe,
15:18
but we're not really together.
15:23
Paul says, I want to see you.
15:30
The church ought to be a place
15:31
where we pray for each other,
15:32
but to do so,
15:34
it needs to be a place
15:35
where we see each other.
15:37
What's happening here is important.
15:41
We're not just singing some songs,
15:53
we're saying hello to someone we don't know.
15:58
My hope is nobody comes in this building
16:05
You notice someone sitting by themselves.
16:08
Nice to meet you.
16:09
You want to come sit with me and my family?
16:10
I see you don't have anybody to sit with.
16:14
Sure, come sit with me.
16:17
I heard a story the other day
16:18
of a guy who went to a church.
16:20
They had a welcome time.
16:22
You know that time where
16:28
Yeah, that time.
16:29
And they had a three-minute welcome time,
16:32
just like during the gathering,
16:34
we're going to shake hands,
16:36
The guy said in three minutes,
16:38
he had never been there before.
16:41
and zero people said hello to him and his wife.
16:45
It made me mad.
16:47
And it made me wonder,
16:49
are there folks who come in here
16:50
and no one says hello?
16:52
And not just hello,
16:53
like, hey, we're at the same movie,
16:54
but hi, nice to meet you.
16:56
I'm glad you're here.
16:57
Where are you from?
16:58
Tell me about your family.
17:01
What do you do for work?
17:04
What brings you here?
17:06
I mean, in those types of conversations,
17:08
you could see how someone's doing.
17:11
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
17:16
I don't really get subtlety.
17:19
But if you pray for wisdom from the Lord,
17:21
he's going to show you
17:27
Okay, I know we just met,
17:29
but I can see you seem to be upset about something.
17:33
You don't have to tell me what's going on.
17:34
Is there something I can pray for you about?
17:36
Could I pray with you right now?
17:39
That's what the church ought to be.
17:44
It ought to be a place
17:45
where we're praying for each other.
17:46
It ought to be a place
17:47
where we're seeing each other.
17:53
as is the habit of some.
18:00
but also seeing each other to be known,
18:03
to not be alone in our struggles
18:13
than it's ever been before.
18:15
And I would say it is a more lonely place
18:18
than it has ever been before.
18:21
Maybe you're here,
18:24
you're sitting in a room full of people
18:25
and you feel alone.
18:30
I want you to know that
18:31
my hope as a pastor,
18:35
is this will be a place
18:36
where every person is seen,
18:45
Paul says in verse 11,
18:47
he says,
18:47
for I long to see you
18:48
that I may impart to you
18:55
So the church needs to be
18:57
praying for each other.
18:58
The church needs to be a place
18:59
where we see each other.
19:03
where we are using our spiritual gifts
19:07
to build each other up.
19:11
Just go to the right one book
19:23
We'll look at verse 4.
19:39
to this church,
19:46
and then 14,
19:50
Now you don't need to be intimidated
19:54
What's being talked about
19:55
is when a person comes to know Jesus,
19:57
when they repent of their sin
20:01
comes to live inside of them
20:03
and gives to every Christian
20:21
are exactly the same.
20:23
We're all unique.
20:29
Paul says,
20:30
Now there are varieties of gifts,
20:32
but the same Spirit.
20:34
There are varieties of service,
20:36
but the same Lord.
20:40
but it is the same God.
20:42
Just a little insight there.
20:45
Verse 5 and 6.
20:45
You see the Trinity.
20:46
You see the Spirit.
20:47
You see the Lord who's Jesus.
20:48
And you see God the Father.
20:50
You see this all being about the same thing.
20:59
But they're all used for the same purpose.
21:03
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit
21:06
for the common good.
21:11
Paul would say,
21:16
is to excel in building up
21:20
It's like the body metaphor is used.
21:25
they use the body,
21:29
They all have a different function,
21:30
but we need them all in the body.
21:34
So my toes are different than my fingers.
21:37
My eyes are different than my ears.
21:43
every person who's repented of their sins
21:46
has been given by the Holy Spirit
21:57
It's like a team.
22:06
he does not want to contribute to the team,
22:10
the team's going to have problems.
22:16
but the team's going to have some major problems
22:18
if he's not ready to go.
22:20
So there are positions on a football team,
22:27
but there are many contributing players
22:30
to the team that the team would not
22:33
if they were not ready to go,
22:35
if they were not prepared.
22:37
One of the greatest hindrances to the church
22:42
is that there are many Christians here
22:47
in Goodrich who come, sit,
22:55
learn some things from the scripture,
22:57
and leave, and never figure out
22:59
what their spiritual gift is
23:01
and never use it.
23:09
the staff, they have all the spiritual gifts.
23:12
So that's their job, right?
23:14
They're the pros.
23:16
For me, I don't have all the spiritual gifts.
23:18
Not even close.
23:22
If you know me at all, I love to teach.
23:25
I never saw that gift coming in my life.
23:29
When my wife and I met and we got married,
23:31
I was not planning on being a preacher.
23:37
And I thought, I'm never doing that ever again.
23:42
and it's a bizarre journey that he's taken me on.
23:48
It's a gifting that I have.
23:50
Leadership is a gifting that I have.
23:52
But there are many, many, many other gifts
23:54
that I do not have.
23:56
One of them is the gift of mercy.
24:00
Now you need someone to come in and say,
24:02
you need someone to come in and solve a problem?
24:06
I'll get the job done.
24:07
You need someone to come in and be merciful
24:12
and their presence when they come in the room
24:17
Don't call me.
24:19
It's not me.
24:21
I don't even say that to be silly.
24:23
I just say that to go, yeah, it's not me.
24:25
But there are those people when they show up,
24:27
you're just like, oh, they're here.
24:30
They don't have to say anything.
24:32
They just comfort you.
24:34
You want to put your head on their shoulder?
24:36
And you're just like, oh, this is just so nice.
24:39
Thank you for showing up.
24:40
Right?
24:41
They have the gift of mercy.
24:41
There are other people who have the gift of encouragement.
24:47
You leave their presence and you're just like,
24:51
I think I can do it.
24:54
I'm really built up.
24:55
I listen to some of these pastors sometimes
24:57
and I'm like, wow, that's not me.
25:01
They're just exciting and encouraging
25:04
and they build you up and you leave their presence
25:07
and you're like, let's go.
25:09
I'm ready to go.
25:11
I'm ready to run.
25:12
This is awesome.
25:17
Those are a couple of gifts that I know I don't have.
25:21
Many others.
25:22
But I know for a fact some of you sitting in this room
25:25
you do.
25:29
You have those gifts.
25:32
Well, what happens to our church team, this body,
25:51
You might know some facts about the Bible that you didn't know.
25:54
You might be challenged every single week.
25:58
But every great coach knows you can't always be challenged.
26:02
Sometimes you have to be encouraged.
26:06
Sometimes you have to build up and not just tear down.
26:09
So what do we need?
26:10
We need those who are different from me
26:14
to be functioning with their gifts.
26:16
Using your gifts for the purpose of your life.
26:18
The building up of the body of Christ.
26:22
Paul says,
26:23
I long to see you that I may impart to you
26:32
That is that we may be mutually encouraged
26:37
by each other's faith, both yours and mine.
26:41
So the church ought to be praying for each other.
26:43
The church ought to be a place where we are seen.
26:49
to build up one another.
26:50
And the church ought to be encouraging each other.
26:55
And here's the specific way.
26:57
Encouraging each other with our faith.
27:02
With our faith.
27:12
And not just encouraged with spiritual sounding things
27:23
They need to be told real things.
27:30
Paul says, I'm not just going to show up in Rome
27:35
You're going to strengthen me.
27:37
This is going to be a two-way street
27:39
and we're going to encourage each other.
27:40
We're going to encourage each other with our faith.
27:43
Someone in your row today is thinking about giving up.
27:46
Someone in your row today is thinking about
27:48
throwing in the towel on their marriage.
27:50
Someone in your row thinks,
27:52
man, I just can't do any more with my kid.
27:54
I don't know what else to do.
27:57
Someone in your row is saying,
27:59
man, I just don't know if I can keep following Jesus.
28:01
This is just too hard.
28:02
I don't understand it.
28:03
I'm just overwhelmed with guilt, shame,
28:05
whatever it might be.
28:07
And we need to be encouraging each other.
28:08
But we can't do that if we just come in,
28:13
and shuffle out to our cars.
28:18
It's a time.
28:23
It's showing up and saying,
28:24
I'm going to introduce myself.
28:26
I'm going to say hi to someone I don't know.
28:29
I'm going to listen.
28:32
I'm going to pray for them.
28:33
I'm going to say, listen,
28:34
can I pray for you right now?
28:36
And then I'm going to write down your name
28:37
and I'm going to pray for you this week.
28:40
because I want to hear how it went.
28:42
I want to hear how that meeting went.
28:45
I want to hear how this happened with the counselor.
28:49
I want to know,
28:49
because I want to keep praying for you.
28:51
I want to say, hey, how did AA go this week?
28:53
Did you stay sober this week?
28:55
I want to be praying for you.
29:00
But I'd be encouraged by that.
29:03
The Bible says we encourage each other by our faith.
29:06
So it's praying for each other.
29:07
But then here's what also happens.
29:09
Someone says, yeah, I'm going through this in my life.
29:11
And God, in his divine purposes,
29:14
you're not sitting in the seats or in this room
29:16
or in this community by accident.
29:18
God put you in here.
29:19
And there's someone who needs to talk to you today.
29:22
And you need to talk to them
29:23
because
29:24
you have gone through what they are going through.
29:28
And they'll start talking.
29:31
You'll be like, you got diagnosed with that?
29:40
Oh, your kid's facing that?
29:42
Wow, my son had that too.
29:45
What happens is we encourage each other with our faith.
29:55
through that circumstance.
29:58
Someone says, I don't know if I can make it.
30:00
You can say, yes, you can.
30:02
I will be praying for you.
30:03
But let me tell you my story.
30:06
Man, I'm thinking about giving up.
30:08
I just don't know if we can go any further.
30:10
And you're going to say, yes, you can.
30:12
I'm going to be praying for you that God will strengthen you.
30:14
But let me tell you how God carried me
30:16
and my husband through that.
30:18
Or me and my son through that.
30:20
Or how God navigated me through that diagnosis.
30:23
Let me encourage you with my faith.
30:27
See, that faith comes back to the faithfulness of God.
30:32
Sometimes it's Christians needing to once again hear the gospel.
30:38
Once again hear the good news of Jesus Christ.
30:41
I'm really discouraged.
30:42
I'm really down.
30:43
I'm really down.
30:43
I'm really depressed.
30:44
I'm really anxious about the circumstances of the world.
30:47
And you can say, listen, remember, God loves you so much
30:52
that he sent Jesus to die on the cross for your sin.
30:55
Jesus was buried and Jesus didn't stay dead.
31:00
There's nothing he can't beat.
31:05
Sometimes we come in and we're discouraged by our sin.
31:07
I messed up this week.
31:08
I fouled up again.
31:09
I said the thing I said last Sunday I wasn't going to do.
31:12
I did all week.
31:13
We just need someone to look at us and say, God loves you.
31:18
So much.
31:18
He paid the penalty for your sin on the cross of Calvary.
31:25
The gospel again, the good news that Jesus died for our sins.
31:30
Jesus was buried and Jesus rose from the dead.
31:35
You're here and you don't know the Lord.
31:39
You're sitting here right now and you hear about this idea of church.
31:42
And you're like, wow, that's really interesting.
31:44
But the truth is you don't know who Jesus is.
31:46
The Bible says in Romans 10, 9, if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord.
31:54
And if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you'll be saved.
31:59
Right here, right now, you can come to God in faith.
32:06
You can be saved.
32:10
You can be born again.
32:12
You can become part of the church, which is God's family, God's people.
32:18
I'm going to ask you just across the room to bow your heads, to close your eyes.
32:25
Just an opportunity for you to spend a moment reflecting with God.
32:31
There's some personal time with you and God.
32:40
Maybe you're here and Sunday gathering has just become a spectator sport for you.
32:52
It's something that you watch, something that you observe.
32:54
But it's not something you are working hard to be part of.
33:02
Maybe you're here longing for peace.
33:20
There's a heaviness of sin in your heart.
33:25
The Bible says you can call on the name of the Lord and be saved.
33:33
Maybe you're here.
33:40
You need to be public about your faith.
33:45
Baptism isn't to be saved.
33:48
Baptism is because you've been saved.
33:50
It's a way of showing on the outside what God has done on the inside.
33:53
Maybe that's you. You need to be baptized today.
34:06
Maybe for you, it's you need to figure out what spiritual gift you have.
34:12
With every head bowed and every head closed in just a moment, I'm going to pray.
34:18
He's going to lead us in a
34:21
final song. Pray that you'll listen
34:25
as an individual, that you'll listen
34:28
to what the Holy Spirit may be doing
34:30
in your heart, may be speaking to you right now.
34:38
Baptism, in just a second
34:39
after I pray and the song plays,
34:42
you can walk right through the curtains on my left,
34:44
your right, folks back there,
34:49
shorts and t-shirts and towels, they'd love
34:51
to help you be baptized. Prayer is
34:58
that you'll listen to the Holy Spirit as He speaks
35:01
to your heart.
